Roper Sees Road to Recovery and Unemployment Study
Secretary Roper described the U S economy as on the road to recovery while urging a thorough study of unemployment and relief as a key next step. He cited a 468 percent rise in industrial output and 52 percent farm income gains since 1933 and noted continuing joblessness as a major challenge. He discussed replacing labor with machinery and cited Hopkins forecasting private and public projects to absorb 200000 unemployed weekly through July 1. The report also notes farm income rising to 8.11 billion in 1935 and manufacturing output up fourfold since March 1933 with factory payrolls and earnings up significantly. About 50000 wanderers rode the rods through LaCrosse, Wis., over four months ending in November.

Manufacturers oppose Wheeler-Rayburn bill expand FTC powers
The National Association of Manufacturers attacked the Wheeler-Rayburn bill to extend the Federal Trade Commission’s investigative powers. They called the proposal an enormous extension of power and joined the Chamber of Commerce and the American Newspaper Publishers Association in opposing it. The bill would let the FTC regulate deceptive acts and inquire into businesses on its own initiative.
