Fair and warmer tonight with Wednesday generally fair. Temperatures range from 68 at the afternoon peak to 44 at night, with the northwest cooler. Hourly readings show a steady climb from morning 40 to 68 by afternoon.
Arthur Brisbane lauds Coolidge and previews Hoover as engineer leader. Notes calm transfer and continued public service. Mentions inauguration color scheme Red White Blue and Pacific sailors at the White House. Concludes with farmers interest in the fifty cow milking table.
The Senate approved President Hoover's cabinet nominees including Henry L. Stimson Secretary of State James W. Good Secretary of War William D. Mitchell Attorney General Andrew Mellon Walter F. Brown Charles Francis Adams Jay Lyman Wilbur Arthur M. Hyde and others. The slate outlines long careers and ties to prior administrations with Mellon noted to serve about a year in the treasury post.
Today in the legislature the House engrossed Wirtz bill empowering the Democratic executive committee to bar bolters from the 1930 Primary. A small river beds bill stalled in the Senate for a Tuesday special order. The House passed a bill tightening penalties for liquor violations and the Senate engrossed Woodward’s bill to place regulation of motor trucks under the railroad commission.
A record crowd is expected as old fiddlers contest tickets sell briskly at the Municipal auditorium. Seats were bought at noon and sales continue at City Drug Store. Entries closed March 1. Eck Robertson and other Southwest fiddlers will compete for the Panhandle championship and $200 prize money.
President Hoover sees no reason to alter the policy permitting licensed shipments of arms and munitions from the United States to the Mexican government, a practice in place for the past five years.
P. H. Landergin aged 75 prominent Amarillo cattleman and pioneer of the Panhandle died at his home after a weeklong influenza illness. Survived by nephew Frank Donegan and two nieces Miss Mary Donegan and Miss Virginia Corbin, with son-in-law Grady Nobles. Landergin helped found Landergin Brothers with his late brother John. Born in New York, he later moved to Coffeyville Kansas before expanding cattle interests fifty years ago. Funeral plans awaiting final arrangements.
Four men involved with the late Arnold Rothstein were arrested in New York as about to ship five packages of narcotics valued at $1,000,000 at street prices to Kentucky California Missouri and Texas. Griggs ambulance. Phone 4311.
A new $200 million Aviation Corporation was announced by Graham B. Grosvenor of Fairchild Aviation Company. The holding company will include railroad, steamship and banking partners and hold stakes in at least six manufacturing and transport firms. William B. Harriman will chair the board. other directors include Harry S. New and L. W. Baldwin.
The report notes federal troops advancing on two fronts in Mexico to counter rebel forces. Gen. Plutarco Elias Calles leads the Army of the North toward Sonora with 1000 miles to the northwest, while Gen. Andres Almazan commands the Army of the South to oppose Gen. Jesus Maria Aguirre near Vera Cruz and Mexico City. Official word suggests wider rebel involvement, with Coahuila implicated and scattered disturbances across Oaxacan areas.
E G Rhenstorm operations manager of Texas Air Transport and Silliman Evans vice president will visit Amarillo late this week to present terminal facility requirements for their proposed Amarillo line. They are presently in Brownsville and will return to Fort Worth before heading on to Amarillo.
Resolutions adopted at Panhandle Livestock Association con ventions call for speedier tariff action on imported beef and authorize a special committee to pursue favorable income tax rulings. J M Hellings urges meat advertising, citing 5 cents per animal could lift meat demand 25 percent in three years. Memorial service honors Amarillo cattlemen Pat Lander gin Lee Bivins Fred Horsburgh and John W Puckett. Forty registered Herefords auctioned. banquet and entertainment follow at Amarillo venues.
An 18 month old boy, Edward Nelson, fell into a half barrel pool in his Houston yard while playing near water. Despite quick emergency efforts and artificial respiration, he died at the hospital. The incident occurred Monday as the family kept ducks with a duck pond in the yard.
In Washington on March 6 the Democratic caucus re elected Senator Robinson of Arkansas as minority leader for the next Congress with Walsh as assistant minority leader Sheppard as whip and Black as caucus secretary The caucus also named Robinson to appoint the steering committee Republicans renominated officers including Moses as president pro tempore Thayer as secretary Barry as sergeant at arms and the Rev E B Phillips as chaplain.
Senator Walter Woodward of Coleman defends the Small land bill against Governor Moody's veto. He argues the state has not given away public lands, noting occupants paid for lands and taxes, while contesting the attorney general stance as flawed. West Texans attend as the debate begins.
The Rotary Club will conduct a memorial noon meeting this Thursday honoring P. H. Landergin and Fred Hartsbrugh who died recently. The ladies night program, previously moved, is rescheduled for Thursday March 14. Fred Bone, club president, announced the tribute.
Three visiting Dallas girls tried to straighten a curve on West Sixth Street and crashed into a four room bungalow. Billie Rich has a broken leg and serious wounds while Peggy O Neal sustained serious injuries. Imogene Cook, Billie s sister, was arrested for intoxication and fined 15 dollars. The accident occurred at 6 o clock while Mr and Mrs Harold L Murphy slept at 504 Georgia Street.
