New York March 3 UPI The Toilet Goods Association reported a 2.6 percent drop in cosmetic sales for 1947 marking the first decline in a decade. The drop was blamed on a 20 percent excise tax and higher living costs affecting consumer spending.
A Senate move grows to strengthen the European recovery program with a western nation mutual defense pact against Soviet aggression. Sen. Joseph H. Ball and other Republicans push a veto free supreme council of 11 nations to enforce force against aggression, open to UN Security Council members accepting no veto. Universal military training is urged to support ERP amid Czech coup and Soviet pressure on Finland. LEADERSHIP: Vandenberg hinted at opposition on page six.
Directors of Amarillo Gas Company and Amarillo Oil Company met in Kansas City yesterday and announced leadership changes. RE Wertz moves from president to chairman of the oil company. Herb Budke to assume a top post in the gas group. Rusk elevates to vice president of Amarillo Oil Company with long service and local leadership roles noted.
General Tom C Soday refused to be a Santa Claus to the states as a House Senate judiciary subcommittee pressed to back a bill erasing federal claims to offshore submerged lands. Clark acknowledged the dispute but said the federal claim to California coast was not the main reason for the suit. Fire destroyed Three Tuns Inn, a landmark in Norristown once used by George Washington, in a $100,000 blaze.
Rev. John F. Johnston, 68, longtime Panhandle pastor and missionary, died at his home on Mississippi Street after a prolonged illness. Born in Boonville Arkansas, he served at San Jacinto and Glenwood Baptist Churches, and later as Palo Duro Missionary Association secretary for three years, earning wide local regard.
Gov James E Folsom of Alabama faced two lawsuits alleging he is the father and common law husband of Christine Putnam Folsom. The suits claim he lived with her in multiple states and introduced her as the first lady of Alabama.
Livestock primping fills the morning as Panhandle Hereford Breeders Association prepares 80 head for a blue ribbon sale at Tri-State Fairgrounds. Auctioneer Earl Gartin of Greensburg Indiana is set to open the purebreds at 1 pm with top 50 cattle used to compute the sale’s average. Forty seven consignors from Texas Oklahoma and nearby states send notable animals as evening events include a Quarter Horse barbecue square dance and wrestling demo at the Sports Arena.
Sacramento report details Helen Jackley driving nude through a red light on Broadway. Patrolmen stop her. in municipal court she explains a husband forced her to go out in the open. Judge McDonnell sentences her to 90 days in jail or a 350 fine. she pays the fine after hours in jail.
Sam E. Nelson, photographer of 1619 Fannin, was lured by four men offering work and assaulted near Amarillo Hotel. They drove him to East Third, robbed him of his car a 1940 Jag sedan and left him near Second and Polk. Nelson received 17 stitches and his car was found abandoned near the Rock Island railroad. Detectives pursue several other thefts while Jim Curtis and Pat Pipkins report burglaries and thefts at local residences.
In Haifa an Arab residential area was rocked by a truckload dynamite blast killing 11 Arabs and wounding 21. The Stern Gang claimed responsibility as several children died and the seven story Salamon Building was wrecked. Army units and rescue crews searched the rubble amid fears of more victims.
Wheat fell over three cents while corn and oats edged up on the Chicago Board of Trade. General MacArthur said he cannot return home to testify on China aid, Congress should not underrate their needs. House Un-American Activities Committee subpoenaed the Commerce Department on loyalty of Condon. Britain exhausted its US loan funding, drawing the final draft. An interior decorator testified she outfitted Maj. Gen. Meyers' Washington apartment for ten thousand dollars as part of the war case.
In Fort Worth on March 3 the so called Battle of Midway ended with Dallas prevailing as the CAA announced equal footing for Love Field in Dallas and Fort Worth International Airport. Ellott outlined a plan that lowered Fort Worth from Class 6 to Class 5 and raised Love Field from Class 4 to Class 5, allowing Midway to serve both cities.
Cloudy with dense fog and drizzle across Amarillo and vicinity. Cooling tonight as temperatures fall slightly. Thursday brings more clouds and light snow flurries, clearing by afternoon. West Texas stays partly to mostly cloudy with scattered showers and colder air tonight into Thursday. New Mexico sees scattered snow flurries north today and showers across the state tonight and Thursday. Temperatures rise to about 40 with a low around 27 to 28.
Walter Watts of the English Field Weather station reports general soupy conditions over the High Plains. Fog mist and freezing drizzle blanket the area slowing highway travel and interrupting airline service. The region shifts from yesterday's sun to a gloomier outlook with colder temperatures and a maximum just above freezing.
A late night cold snap brought 27 degree temperatures with 35 degree wind driven flurries. By noon the thermometer stood at 28 degrees, and a cloudy forecast calls for scattered light snow flurries with partial clearing in the afternoon. Temperatures dip again Thursday night as a cold air mass settles in. no major precipitation is expected.
