President Truman signed an eight month rent control extension calling the bill inadequate and saying it offers limited relief. He urged action on a long range housing program and urged governors to protect tenants. He warned that the 15 percent lease increase is voluntary and could threaten veterans housing as delays continue.
A House committee approved a bill to let holders of GI terminal leave bonds cash them immediately. About nine million bonds with a face value near 1.8 billion dollars could be cashed at some 16,000 banks starting Sept. 2 if the measure passes.

The House approved a 20 percent hike in pension payments for Spanish American War Civil War Boxer Rebellion and Philippine Insurrection veterans and their widows and children by a 338 to 0 vote. Senate action pending. Current monthly rates run from 40 to 100 dollars.
A German hoax about an assassination plot against General Eisenhower during the Battle of the Bulge proved false. Robert E. Merriam, Army Historical Division, says the plot was gossip that caused needless alarm as Allied troops guarded rear areas and Eisenhower appeared to be a prisoner in his HQ while Skorzeny’s forces moved elsewhere.
Amarillo's Harry Lamprich and Pampa's Grover Seitz were chosen by players to manage North and South squads for the Gold Sox Field game Wednesday night. The Lamprich North team includes Amarillo Berger Clovis Albuquerque, while the South features Lubbock Pampa Abilene Lamesa. Lamprich, 26, is noted as one of the youngest managers in organized baseball.

Brockton Massachusetts police hunt an Amarillo Texas man, Louis B. Conley, 26, on warrants for assaulting his wife and mother in law and kidnapping his two year old daughter. He allegedly entered two homes last Thursday and fled in a car with described but unregistered plates amid checks on air and rail lines.
Amarillo’s Waddy Week forecast promises relief with a high near 87 in mild relief from Sundays 93. Chief Observer Winburn predicts good weather for several days with no measurable precipitation. Nearby towns like Childress at 106 and Lubbock at 105 marked the state’s hottest areas as night cools to 64.
