County Officials in Austin To Confer on Bond Refund Suit

County Judge E O Northcutt County Attorney Tom Seay and County Auditor John Crudgington were invited to Austin to confer with state attorneys about a bond refund suit. Mrs Gertrude Hill Gavin of St Paul Minn and United Benefit Life Insurance Co Omaha claim damages from the county 1927 hospital bond refund. The suit, filed in 108th District Court, seeks to address a $90 000 tax saver. The county refunded $168 000 in hospital bonds at a cut rate of interest and the plaintiffs allege financial injury. The county sold bonds at 5 percent while a 2 percent rate was available and used by commissioners.

Seek 1 000 Members In Chamber of Commerce

The Amarillo Hotel hosted the morning breakfast meeting of the membership committee where the goal of reaching 1 000 Chamber of Commerce members was discussed. About 40 volunteers reported 33 new members last month bringing the total to 692. Chairman Bill Gilstrap and John Boyce spoke on progress toward growth.

Four Candidates Fail to File First Expense Reports

Potter County notices show four candidates did not file their initial expense reports with County Clerk Hubert Cole by the deadline. Names include Morris Browning for county judge. R. L. Buck for county commissioner district 4. E. C. Paxton for district 3. and Haskell Beaver for district 1. The first Democratic Primary is set for July 22 with no second primary planned.

Allies tighten grip as Cherbourg area battles intensify

Allied forces reported progress on the Cherbourg peninsula with 3,000 sor ties flown yesterday. US troops captured a German arsenal and attacked Maupertus air field while remnants around Cap de la Hague were hemmed in. Montgomery eyed Tourville for a decisive thrust to cut Rommel’s Caen lines and trap divisions as Tiger and Panther tanks clashed.

Trash Truck Fire Threatens City Vehicle

A City Trash Department collection truck caught fire in an alley behind 318 East Third Avenue. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, with only the truck bed slightly scorched and no serious damage reported.

A total of 224 armed forces members asked County Clerk Hubert Cole to mail absentee ballots for the July 22 Democratic primary. Some will be disappointed because only applications with a poll tax receipt will receive ballots. all 224 will get war ballots for the November general election for national offices only.
