The Senate approved the conference report on the 630 million agriculture department appropriation bill. It allocates 500 million for soil conservation, restoring the 60 million previously cut by the Senate, as restored by conferees last week.

He had spent more than two hours trying to thumb a ride toward Crosbyton as police investigated. The day’s high reached 98 degrees, seven below the season record of 103 set June 24.

A three month search for J. H. Simmons charged with swindling and embezzlement in connection with alleged insurance fraud ended with his arrest in El Paso. He was returned to Childress by Sheriff Bill Adams and Sheriff Dick Moore. Simmons allegedly took money from Dr. J B White of Amarillo for a life policy with a Little Rock company. He faces misdemeanor swindling charges in Childress County as officers say he operated insurance frauds across Texas and New Mexico.
R. Arthur Starnes, former Amarillo peace officer and deputy sheriff under Les Whitaker, is visiting his brother W. S. Starnes. Starnes now serves as an Arizona Highway Patrol officer in Phoenix.
