European casualties rise as Chinese and British tensions flare in China with dispatches reporting Europeans killed and many wounded. A British officer allegedly ordered to shoot to kill, while American polo teams claim a 4 to 4 draw against British officers, keeping the polo title in the United States.
The forecast calls for tonight and Saturday to be partly cloudy and warmer. Hourly Amarillo temperatures start at 63 at 7 am and rise to 87 by 3 pm. Extremes a year ago were 105 high and 71 low. East Texas and Oklahoma show fair to partly cloudy skies with warmer conditions tonight into Saturday. General trends indicate warmer north portions and fair to generally fair conditions across the region.
General Pangalos, former war minister and leader of yesterday’s “kid glove” revolution, assumed the Greek premiership after anti government forces seized the telegraph office at Saloniki and forced the Michalakopoulos cabinet to resign. After a lengthy investigation a six man raid from Amarillo and Canyon arrested Elmo Green and J O Faulkner on illicit liquor charges. A thirty gallon still and two and a half gallons of liquor were seized at Green's farm eighteen miles southwest of Amarillo in Randall county.
In Ennis Texas last night robbers gained entry by breaking a lock at Stroud Dockum Wholesale Grocery. Ten full cases of cigarettes worth 640 dollars disappeared from the stock when the store opened today. No other items were taken and a display of georgette dresses was advertised by Montgomery Bros.
Sergeant Douglas F. E. Logan of the United States Army Air Service was killed at Mitchell Field when a fragment from a propeller torn through the fuselage of a Martin bomber he rode. The fatal incident occurred today. He leaves relatives in Bisbee, Arizona.
Jackson Wyoming June 26 Gil Huff a Wyoming rancher rode for safety as a massive avalanche tore down Sheep Mountain crossing the Gros Ventre valley a hundred feet high The moving wall of debris narrowly missed Huff and his horse then flooded nearby ranches and his own home becoming a lake six to seven miles long and 200 feet deep Residents of Kelly Wyoming fled higher ground fearing renewed slides and possible floods with earth tremors reported in the past week.
Chicago June 26 Crowe the state's attorney delivered a furious closing plea in the Shepherd trial denouncing defense lawyers Stewart and OBrien for mockery and alleged conspiracy. He labeled Shepherd a liar and accused the defense of using theatrics to frame the case while defending himself and denouncing crime.
Graham Texas June 26 A man known as Pat McCoy but claiming the name Joe Reilly pleaded guilty to kidnapping 8 year old Tov Adair. He was sentenced to five years in the Texas penitentiary for the March crime committed as the girl walked home from school.
Dr. R. P. Parcells past-president and Rotary star raced from Rensselaer Indiana after a wire warned of danger to the Rotary banner. He flew to Chicago then to Amarillo this morning to support the inter-club field meet and pledged to do his best for Rotary.
Firemen and street workers search the smouldering Gillis theater ruins for bodies after an explosion and blaze wrecked the building in Kansas City Missouri. One firefighter died en route to the scene. authorities fear six to eight bodies remain unaccounted for.
The Griggs Undertaking Company, via the Veterans Bureau in Albuquerque, located the mother of Frank Jacobus, a disabled veteran who died last Sunday. Relatives were missing for some time. Arrangements are not complete, but the body will likely be sent to Bloomfield, New Jersey, where his mother resides.
Court recessed for lunch as Prosecutor Crowe noted unfinished remarks about di plomas and clients. A continuation was set for 2 o clock with a verdict anticipated after a reasonable time.
Jim Barnes, American pro, won the British Open with 300 for 72 holes at Prestwick Scotland. MacDonald Smith led by five but faltered in the final round, finishing with 82 to total 322. Joe Kirkwood totaled 314 after two rough rounds, shooting 76 in both rounds today.
Two girls dressed as boys, Gladys Kemston of Beresford and Alma Stevens of Centerville, were killed when a Chicago and North Western freight train struck them near Alcester South Dakota. Accompanied by Ralph Carlton and Edmund Rowan the youths had ridden the freight from Sioux City in search of food. the girls reportedly spoke of suicide and one youth is missing.
The Mid-West Exploration Company acquires 1100 acres in Wheeler county Shamrock field from Jim Whittington and begins development with a rig near Laycock No 3. Eight hundred thousand dollars paid, two hundred thousand in cash, rest in oil. aims include building a large Shamrock refinery and expanding production under Mid-West Refining, a Standard Oil of Indiana subsidiary.
The International Chamber of Commerce adopted a resolution at Brussels urging settlement of inter allied debts. Dr Walter Leaf was elected president, succeeding Willis Booth Jr. The resolution notes the difficulty of transferring funds, urges special precautions, and calls for accounting for external and internal economic conditions. Also includes unrelated classified material about dress sizes and a coffee show at 315 Polk Street.
