President Roosevelt signed the G I Bill of Rights establishing a broad veterans air program. The measure authorizes federal loans hospitalization job insurance schooling and other benefits costing between 3 and 6.5 billion dollars. He stated it carries out his recommendations and assures veterans aid.
Secretary Stimson reports U S Army casualties through June 6 total 178 677 up 6 319 since June 8. Wounded 71 432, missing 39 976, prisoners 35 980. Navy totals 46 705 with 20 044 killed, 12 905 wounded, 9 295 missing, 4 461 prisoners.
War dispatches describe improving weather aiding beach unloading and air support for the Cherbourg assault. Allied columns under Omar Bradley close in on the port with fast advances along the eastern highway toward St Pierre Eglist and Cap de La Hague. Reconnaissance and heavy German resistance set the stage for the final battle to take Cherbourg.
O M Redding, accused of murdering his wife, was released from the county jail after posting 15600 bond approved by the State Court of Criminal Appeals. The appeals court had previously set 15000 bond after reversing a district court denial. Redding will face trial in 47th District Court with a special venire summoned.
Judge W. E. Gee of the 108th District Court accidentally broke his glasses while weeding his lawn. He dropped the glasses from his pocket and stepped on them, discovering the damage only after the incident.
Amarillo Lodge No. 731 of A F and A M holds its annual officer election at 8 pm in the Khiva Temple lodge rooms. H C Higgins retires as worshipful master with Martin Clifton serving previously, and other officers named are Fred H Galle Henry Lyle and C M Tyler.
County Clerk Hubert Cole announced that absentee voting for the First Democratic Primary on July 22 will run July 1 through July 18. Twenty two residents living outside the city have submitted applications. ballots have not yet been printed.

Mrs. W C Pickett and neighbor Mrs. Turner found a color changing hose wriggling into a four foot snake when they went to pick it up. A long handled hoe later ended the encounter and both women declined to pursue the cause or identify the reptile.
In U S Federal Court at Amarillo Judge T Whitfield Davidson will charge the jury in the Bynum vs Phillips Petroleum royalty and Moore County gas lease case this afternoon. Testimony began Monday with each side allotted 30 minutes for opening arguments. Judge Wilson, who disqualified himself, is absent and conducting business elsewhere this week.
