Eva the 2 year old circus elephant visits the Benjamin Franklin hotel lobby as Gov. Thomas J. Herbert of Ohio displays a Taft button. The Taft GOP delegation promotes the campaign pet with signs. In a separate incident a speeding car crashes into the G C Oliver home injuring a child and prompting police involvement.
A driverless vehicle sped down Crockett Street late Sunday and crashed into a home causing extensive damage with no injuries. Early Monday a youth was arrested for theft of the car involved in the crash.
County commissioners consider closing a rural road known as Lovers Lane from Gem Lake to Western Avenue though County Atty Roy Snodgrass cautions any petition to reopen would require proof of intended use. In other news a theft case yields arraignment for William Haggerton, known as Skeeter, amid a car crash case involving a 1947 Kaiser sedan linked to the Oliver home.
Amarillo postmaster W. D. DeGrassi said a stamp vending machine will be placed in the main post office lobby late Monday afternoon closing the regular stamp window. The machine has three rolls offering one cent three cent and airmail stamps. Additional machines will be ordered for branch offices.
Delegates at the 24th national GOP convention convene to debate foreign policy, branding communism as the top issue for November. Carroll Reece frames the race as Republicanism versus Communism as Gov. Duff and temporary chairman Dwight Green address the gathering. Harold Stassen predicts a long nomination fight with Dewey’s momentum noted.
Brig. Gen. William Martin said exemptions in the peacetime draft bill mirror its original form. Enlistees aged 19 to 25 who join a federally recognized National Guard unit before the president signs the act are exempt, as are men 18 or older who join before turning 18. Guard members must stay until 25, and college students are exempt only for the current year. Amarillo has five active Guard units including the 142nd Infantry.
The court ruled unions may use their newspapers to back candidates despite Taft Hartley Act limits on labor political spending. It dismissed the indictment against CIO and its president Murray, who had distributed a CIO newspaper to support a candidate, while four justices favored upholding the ban. Justice Reed announced the unanimous dismissal.
The Ray Sugar Robinson Bernard Docusen welterweight title bout was postponed due to threatening weather and rescheduled for next Monday night in Chicago.
A severe tornado ripped through Lilly, 14 miles north of Wellington, around 7:38 last night causing extensive property damage and livestock losses. No injuries were reported, but several homes and barns collapsed and windows were blown out as residents sought shelter in a cellar.
Clear nights and mild mornings give way to partly cloudy afternoons today and Tuesday. Western Texas sees widely scattered thundershowers east of the Pecos River this afternoon or tonight, with little temperature change. Northern New Mexico reports scattered afternoon storms in the mountains and fair conditions elsewhere. Highs and lows around 90 and 63 with trace precipitation.

A blast at the Kenvil New Jersey Nitro plant killed three workers and damaged three buildings. The blast rocked northern New Jersey with eastern time reporting. cause undetermined and possible additional injuries were noted by a company spokesman.
