Music Prof and Former Pupil Reunite After 35 Years
Walter Allen Stults emeritus professor at Northwestern University and Emil P. Myers Amarillo music teacher met yesterday after over three decades. Stults taught Myers at Northwestern in 1913 and both recalls teaching Amarillo’s Mary McCormic. Myers organized the first Panhandle Music Festival in 1914 featuring Stults in the bass role and Mimi Rankin as soprano. Rankin later studied with Stults in Evanston and joined the Chicago Opera Company. Stults plans to retire after 41 years as Northwestern’s voice department chair. The Panhandle Festival faded after the 1920s, once hosting stars like Kreisler, Galli-Curi, Schumann-Heink, Paderewski, Spalding, Anna Case, Sousa, and the Chicago Opera Company.
