Federal Prison In Texas Best Food Producer
La Tuna's government run farm north of El Paso, a unit of the federal correction system, led all federal prisons in 1940 food production. Warden T B White says the sunny climate and trained workers enabled high yields of root and leaf vegetables and a wide variety, with an average per capita vegetable production of 1.06 pounds daily. The farm relies on prison labor and modern equipment, transforming former desert land into a productive site.
