Tokyo dispatch reports American Sabre jets destroyed six MIGs and damaged eight more in two big dogfights over Korea, with 118 planes involved. The battles near the Manchurian border marked a renewed jet war as UN and Chinese forces clash along the front and airfields face heavy strikes.
St Louis June 16 AP The new chairman of the Senate Crime Investigating Committee urged the death penalty for narcotics peddlers to deter widespread teen drug use. Sen Herbert O Connor Maryland Democrat told over 10 000 Kiwanis delegates that harsher measures, akin to the Lindbergh Law, are needed to stamp out dope trafficking and curb the rise in young users.
Rickey Gerken, six, and Judy Gerken, three, children of Paul and Mrs. Gerken, sell cherries outside their Washington Avenue home for 30 cents a quart. A cash register, holding more than ten dollars, will not open until it reaches that amount. They plan to save the money, perhaps to buy candy, using earnings from fruit trees in their yard. Rickey wears horned rim glasses and an old Civil War coat for business, while Judy sports her grandmother’s hat and a play dress. The venture will continue until they tire or run out of cherries.
Matthew J. Taylor age 33, brother of two Amarillo women Mrs. Jack Drake and Mrs. L. I. Armstrong, was killed when his crop-dusting plane nosed over and burned near Paris. He served in World War II, studied at West Texas State College, and had lived in Shamrock three years. He leaves a wife Dorothy Jo Clark, two children Joe Matt and Karla, his parents Mr. and Mrs. A. Taylor of Vega, and a brother Roy Taylor. Body at Paris funeral home, arrangements incomplete.

Gyles and Wilson Gyles pleaded nolo contendere for the company and themselves and were fined $1 on five counts. The June term opened with Judge Joe B. Dooley. government reps District Atty Frank Potter and assistant Cavidt S. Binion. US Marshal Red Wright. Deputy Marshal Verna Ditto. and Dist. Clerk George W. Parker.
HOUSTON June 18 Ernest O Thompson senior member of the Texas Railroad Commission was reported in a satisfactory condition at Hermann Hospital. Further tests were to be made to diagnose his yet undetermined ailment.
In the American League, Cleveland defeats Boston with a homer by Rosen driving in two. In the National League, Bickford and Mueller face Hiller and Edwards while Feller duels Hegan and Taylor opposed by Moss. Chicago and New York prepare for a St. Louis matchup tonight.
English teacher Marjorie Curtis of Maldon Secondary Modern School for Girls Essex will replace Gladys Davis at Horace Mann School in Amarillo. Davis departs July 1. Curtis plans arrival late summer to discuss teaching arrangements before leaving for the United States. Curtis, born in Wivenhoe near Colchester, has taught 11-year-olds in London and now serves as senior assistant at Maldon.
Strong winds up to 100 miles per hour lashed western Oklahoma centering Fort Sill Lawton injuring 25 soldiers four severely. Airfield planes and tents at Fort Sill suffered extensive damage estimated at 500000 dollars while Lawton residents reported injuries and property loss.
Mrs Rose DiMaggio, renowned as baseball’s most famous mother, died in San Francisco at age 72. Her son Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees arrived by plane hours before her death, while brother Dom DiMaggio of the Boston Red Sox missed his connection and did not reach in time.
Everett Scudder, 55, was found dead with three gunshot wounds to the forehead at a residence on East Fourteenth. A 22 caliber rifle lay beside him. He was rushed to Northwest Texas Hospital by Blackburn Shaw ambulance in critical condition at 12 45 PM after an emergency call at 10 15 AM.
The Weather Bureau reports local thundershowers tonight with clearing and warmer conditions Tuesday. High today 91 and tonight 59, with a tomorrow high near 96. Yesterday’s high 90 and low 64. Partly cloudy across West Texas with isolated showers in the Panhandle and South Plains. New Mexico shows scattered thundershowers in the north and along the eastern border, otherwise fair and little temperature change.
A trio of burglary suspects, aged 19 and two at 17, were captured yesterday afternoon by Globe Nets carrier boys and will face questioning by officers from Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma and New Mexico. They likely will be charged with misdemeanor theft in Dumas. The suspects were seen pilfering an automobile owned by Gene Wadsworth, 18, of 1901 Fillmore, two hunting companions returning to their car parked two miles south of the Canadian River on the Dumas highway. Gene Wadsworth, his brother Jay Guy Wadsworth, 14, and Lindley Smith, 18, were on a hunting trip when they noticed the suspects leaving the vehicle. Gene signalled for help.
