War Dept Budget Bill Aims 7.5 Million Army by Year End
The House Appropriations Committee sent to the floor a 71.5 billion dollar War Department supply bill to outfit and sustain 7.5 million enlisted men and a vast air and ground force. It would raise total War Department outlays since July 1 1940 to about 200 billion and defense spending to around 400.9 billion by year end, with funds to be spent in the 12 months starting July 1. The committee and Gen George C Marshall say the money is essential for aggressive warfare and the unconditional surrender of the Axis.
