Five masked gunmen robbed Citizens National Bank in Fort Scott Kansas. Ella Gallaher Studer 69 a longtime Canadian resident and wife of J C Studer pioneer Panhandle cattleman died at her home after a heart attack. Survived by her husband five sons Floyd V John F P Otto H Carl Oscar B and daughter Lola. Funeral from Canadian Baptist Church Sunday at 3 with Rev W C Harrison officiating. Born 1863 near Sweetwater Tennessee she moved to Fort Worth at 14 and to Canadian in 1887.
Gov. Ross Sterling grants general parole to John Bell record No 49426 imprisoned for murder in Colorado County. An 11 year old Huntsville boy, son of a prison official, urged clemency saying Bell has cared for him for two years and supports automatic clemency. Bell has served 12 years of a life sentence and the parole extends to 49 others today.
George Red Barker gangster and racketeer is shot dead by machine gun fire in a ambush nest near a hotel. Police say his killing ends a long quiet in Chicago’s underworld and signals a potential renewed gang war as Barker sought to claim Capone’s vacant power.
In Chicago, a police trap at a Loop gambling den ended with three extortionists dead from shotgun and pistol fire while a fourth fled. The slain men Harold Partner 29 Samuel Katz 27 and Frank Rogers 31 were warned by Lieut Edward Birmingham a week earlier that their fate might come at police hands.
The bullet riddled body of R. K. Helm of Danbury Connecticut was found beside a road near Shanghai. A Chinese boy who found the body said it was dumped from a car and Helm had been shot in the head and lungs.
In Hardinsburg Kentucky Sam Jennings a 38 year old Black man died in a related incident at sunrise after a criminal case involving Miss Mabel Downs. Witnesses included Downs and her father E P Downs watching from twenty feet away. Jennings maintained his innocence saying he did nothing wrong.
A group from Amarillo will depart Monday for a four day trade trip across the South and Southwest Plains. Mason King of the Chamber of Commerce announced the excursion. Expected participants include Bill Beechler E M Blackburn and Ed Hardin.
At dawn a series of explosions ripped the tanker Cymbeline apart at the Vickers drydock in Montreal. A surge of fire and debris killed more than 20 of the about 30 crew members who were asleep aboard, while dozens of workers stood on the pier. The blast originated from the center fuel tank and shook the waterfront.
In Amarillo the mayoral contest remains undecided after 3 candidates split the vote. Ross D. Rogers led with 2,378 while Lon D. Marrs had 2,200 and H A. Daniel 196, awaiting the official canvass and possible runoff.
