Paris report states the French submarine Phenix with about 67 crew has sunk off Saigon Indo China after over 30 hours underwater. Officials gave up hope of saving any crew, relatives informed, ship built in 1930 at Nantes, 302 feet long, redoubtable class with 18 knot surface speed and 10 knot submerged.

One Trace Left by Shankles After Wife Shot
Earl Shankles 80 left only a trace after his young wife Madeline Turner Shankles 18 was shot in their North Taylor Street home at 3 30. He abandoned his car near Amarillo and fled with officers finding it later. No gun was seen. autopsy showed a .22 slug entered under the collarbone traveling downward between ribs. The couple wed June 13 1937. Shankles sought in Panhandle and Lubbock areas as search continues.

Workman Crushed As Canopy Falls at Service Station
Ben Bratcher a 45 year old plumber's helper was killed when a heavy 2000 pound wooden canopy collapsed at the Rudy Bauman service station on Eighth Avenue and Tyler Street. He was digging near the supporting post when the structure fell into a two foot ditch. Bratcher died instantly with bystanders and workmen trying to free him as police dispersed a crowd. He is survived by his widow Nettie Bratcher of 804 North Fillmore. Funeral arrangements are pending at Griggs & Sons Funeral Home.

Tide disturbance may flood Mobile City wharf and bridge
MOBILE Alabama June 16 police warned that a tropical disturbance which struck the Alabama coast could push tide waters over the city wharf and Mobile Bay Bridge causeway. Rain gusts were reported with no major damage. earlier reports placed the storm at Gulf Shores and South Baldwin County with no strong winds there. Washington administration plans to seek 25 million dollars from Congress for strategic war materials not produced domestically for the coming fiscal year.

Miss Katherine Geoghan a seventh grade teacher turned over a threatening note demanding 500 dollars and a gun at a location.
