Youthful wanderer hailed hero after jail break
In Joliet on June 14 a 22 year old John Bell surged into action as four inmates tried to free themselves from Will county jail. Bell shot and killed one prisoner, wounded another, aided in subduing a third, and helped recapture the rest, while Sheriff Markgraff and bystanders watched. The four killers had previously attempted multiple escapes and were known as the jail’s most dangerous inmates.
