Paris is declared an open city as German forces advance toward the capital. French troops and Allied air power, including British bombers, contest the advance while Turkey signs a neutrality pledge amid war pressures.
Egypt pledges greatest possible assistance to Britain in the war against Italy while avoiding offensive action, under the Anglo-Egyptian treaty. Premier Aly Maher Pasha says Egypt will fulfill obligations but keeps a defensive stance despite severed diplomatic ties. Meanwhile an Allied air raid on Turin kills at least fourteen and wounds thirty nine. Fitawari Berou, new Ethiopian imperial commander, departs Jerusalem to fight Italy in Ethiopia.
