Heavy rains flood panhandle highways and creeks

Widespread moisture drenches the Texas Panhandle and neighboring plains with heavy downpours. Morse section in Hansford County records the heaviest rainfall at 65 inches as creeks and draws run full and Four miles of detour on Highway 287 between Dumas and Stratford flood. Railroads report high water but no flood threats though some gravel company tracks washed out. Detours advise motorists to use Dalhart route.

A three alarm blaze at Amarillo Tire Exchange on North Fillmore Street destroyed the building and stock. Fire chief Cooper reported 30 to 35 off duty men assisted as flames spread through skylights. Sign Chopped Down Near Amarillo Sparks Billboard Battle

A private roadside sign at the junction of U S Highway and a county road near Amarillo was cut down after it diverted traffic onto Tenth Avenue away from the official Sixth Avenue route. The highway commission says the sign on private property cannot be removed by the state and will be replaced on its own. Complaints over the misleading sign led to reported friction with the division headquarters.

Army strength and National Guard powers approved

The House military committee advanced a bill to raise the regular army to 400 000 and to authorize the President to call out the National Guard during Congressional recess for use or training within the United States or possessions. The panel also rejected an amendment to permit Guard use anywhere in the Western Hemisphere. The guard authority is limited to the adjournment period until the next Congress convenes.

Italy Could Muster Vast Forces in War to Aid Germany

United Press reports Italy could field about 2 million soldiers along with 2,500 to 3,500 planes and a sizable navy including six dreadnoughts and numerous cruisers and submarines. Troops are concentrated along the Alps frontier, in Africa, Albania, the Dodecanese, Sardinia and Sicily, with major forces in Libya and East Africa, plus naval activity in the Mediterranean. An alpine assault on France is contemplated though passes are narrow and easily defended.
