A noon series of blasts and a spreading fire at J Ernest Stroud & Company welding supply sparked evacuations and caused extensive damage. About 23 explosions were counted as flames shot hundreds of feet, with all workers evacuated and injuries initially feared but later none confirmed. The building at 211 Buchanan was gutted, with damage estimated at $250,000 or more.
Dr E P Thomson of Eagle Rock Cal aged 95, oldest Wabash College graduate born in 1856, flew east to visit his alma mater and his son Henry Thomson in Crawfordsville Ind. He enjoyed his first plane trip and regards air travel as preferable to land routes for scenery, praising wheelchairs and elevators for age, while recalling Phi Kappa Psi memories and optimism about today’s youth. He plans more travel and cherishes public speaking skills from his Presbyterian ministry.
Carter Oil Company reports a new oilfield on M. T. Hap Johnson and Eddie Johnson land south of Norman. Test at 9000 feet yielded 32.5 gravity oil with gas. initial flow reached 25 million cubic feet per hour. Pay comes from lower Ordovician above Arbuckle. nearby fields are Goldsberry and North Washington Pool. N. R. Johnson, Hap’s brother, is listed as No. 1 N. R. Johnson in 30-8N-2W.
About 600 members of Alcoholics Anonymous gathered in Tyler for a three day meeting. The first public session is set for Saturday night with Dr. C. F. Jackson of Des Moines Iowa as principal speaker. Remodeling Loans Olver and Wiggins Lumber Company 1200 West Sixth.
US Defense Secretary George C. Marshall visited the Korean war front near Cheorwon as Allied artillery duels pounded Chinese batteries. He urged peace moves from Red China and pressed for more UN troops to sustain the drive. Generals Ridgway and Van Fleet accompanied him. gains reached a mile in the east while Chinese resistance blocked Western advances near Chorwon.
In the Santa Fe region the McGee and Cross families search for Larry McGee seven, Janet five, and Steven Cross three and a half who wandered from a picnic in the Sangre de Cristo mountains near Santa Fe. State Police Chief Joe Roach directs air and ground teams aided by mobile searchlight trucks. Temperatures stayed about 45 degrees overnight as authorities warn of exposure risks while intensive operations continue.
Los Angeles report describes a collision where Miss Leona Free's car crashed into Herbert Bronson's vehicle, vaulted a curb, tore through a wire fence, crossed 150 feet of yard, damaged a child's swing and smashed Chester Coleman's garage and auto, challenging the idea of garage safety.
Close to five hundred visiting members attended the Elks convention opening. C G Barrett of Amarillo chaired the session with J Rollie Pray of Fort Worth presiding. Wives attended a breakfast then joined a memorial service in the Crystal Ballroom. Afternoon session planned with a style show and tea. Mrs Joe Reid led arrangements for the events. A smorgasbord feed and a dance were scheduled for the evening in the Crystal Ballroom.
Globe reporter Troy Martin dictated a portion of the story from Gulf Service Station at 218 Buchanan near Stroud Company, inside the roped-off area. Paul Timmons and Louise Evans filled in details from police and fire department lines.
Mrs Estelle Moore a bookkeeper said the first blast began in the acetylene generating room at the plant rear. She cited no injuries and named M C Kiernan the plant superintendent and Lloyd McGraw an employee in the back portion at the time. Kiernan directed her to leave as Jim Prowell the assistant manager stood on the balcony floor in the office. The blast described as terrific with the heaviest over the fifth explosion. Cars in nearby lots caught fire briefly but were saved by firefighters. Radcliff Company workers moved merchandise including firefighting gear at 1 pm. Fourth Street near Buchanan shops reported items jolted from shelves as explosions rattled windows and generated fear of harm to bystanders. The second series of blasts began about 12:45 pm less spectacular than the first, producing flames reaching 200 feet high, with at least five fires.
GEORGETOWN June 8 Three persons died in a truck car collision about nine miles north of Georgetown on Highway 81. The dead were Oren A Turnbo of Killeen and two passengers in his car Tuffy Miller 50 and James Jackson Turnbo 49 of Youngsport. Mrs Lola Lee Turnbo 21 and John W Turnbo husband and infant son of James Turnbo were treated for multiple injuries. Ernest Albert Pankonian of Taylor the truck driver was not injured.
The Amarillo region enjoys fair weather with continued warmth through today tonight and Saturday. Forecast highs reach 82 today and 90 tomorrow with lows around 61 and 55. Panhandle outlook shows generally favorable outdoor conditions under clear to partly cloudy skies. West Texas and New Mexico regions report fair weather with little temperature change and no significant changes expected.
In the American League Philadelphia hosts Detroit this afternoon as late scores loom. Evening games include Boston at Cleveland New York at Chicago and Washington at St Louis. In the National League Cincinnati visits Philadelphia Chicago plays New York Pittsburgh faces Brooklyn and St Louis meets Boston.
The VFW district invites General MacArthur to Amarillo with tentative plans for a large reception at Sandie stadium or Tri-State Fair pavilion if rain. The effort originates from Rev Steve R Philpot of the San Jacinto Kiwanis Club and expects 30 000 to 40 000 attendees. Other dignitaries discussed include Joe Martin and Jack Porter.
Federal prosecutors pressed claims of Cohen dodging debts as testimony from a San Francisco resort operator and other associates painted the extent of the gambler’s business ties. Witnesses said Cohen owed tens of thousands in gambling losses, including a $7,900 debt to Zahlout and a $10,000 loss that led to partial repayment.
