Paris June 8 An estimated one hundred thousand coal miners walked out in the north as a million supporters in other regions awaited orders to return to work after a major victory. Employers had agreed to higher pay vacations with pay and other concessions. Government leaders hoped to end the strike quickly noting provincial papers were halted by the action and the miners were unaware of the deal.
Blum's cabinet names three under secretaries including Madame Curie's daughter. A million workers threaten nation-wide strike as government seals a key wage and industry deal. The Clermont Ferrand Michelin plant workers find gates locked as they planned a strike, while socialist radical government pushes legislative program tomorrow.
Texas Centennial opens with diverse entertainments as visitors enjoy the celebration. A Southern gentleman’s letter printed on a dog food can label protests a Globe-News article about dogs and human diets. He denounces the piece and cites Senator West, asking if a dog would.
Fifty heavily armed officers and guards searched the Minnesota River bottoms for 14 criminally insane fugitives from the state asylum. Four suspects were deemed desperate as residents faced warnings of possible attacks while police feared raids on farm houses for weapons after the escape yesterday.
Erwin Edwin Hennershot son of Mr and Mrs I H Hennershot 105 West Forty-First Avenue died after a mishap with a rusty file used as a knife. He fell from a fence puncturing his liver and intestines and died Sunday morning at Northwest Texas Hospital. Funeral in Griggs chapel Lamar Street Baptist officiated by Rev Sibley. Pallbearers named Noble Durkee Cal Farley Alfred Mantell L C Myrick. Interment at Linocemetery. Mr Hennershot hospitalized in Springfield Mass.
A grandstand collapsing during a June 6 parade in Bucharest killed official three but private sources put deaths at 24 and left about 700 injured, with 380 to 400 hospitalized. King Carol and Prince Nicholas helped lead rescue as diplomats lent cars. A prior stand fell 45 minutes earlier with no casualties.
Forecast for Amarillo and nearby areas calls for fair skies tonight and Tuesday with cooler conditions. West Texas and Panhandle expect fair weather tonight and Tuesday with a gradual drop in warmth. Maj Ira C Eaker Army flier completes a landmark blind flight from New York to Los Angeles in 23 hours. He flew a hooded cockpit guided only by instruments and radio guidance from a convoy plane led by Maj William F Kepner. Takeoff was last Wednesday at 12 15 PM and arrival here yesterday at 1 15 PM.
Texas Republicans voted to back Alf M. Landon as presidential nominee on the first and other ballots. The caucus re elected R B Creager and Lena Gay More as national committeemen and marked Exum as vice chairman. Orvill Bullington named to the platform committee. Others chosen to notify nominees and organize the delegation.
