Compromise Reaches Key Tax and Rural Road Plan

In Austin a conference committee settled a tight House Senate deadlock by agreeing on a tax rural roads package. The accord would freeze 7.3 million a year from the bond surplus for rural roads, earmark the rest to the highway department, levy a natural gas gathering tax, and keep last year’s 10 percent tax hikes including the gas tax.

Communist leaders luxury homes shock US readers

Fulton Lewis Jr reports on American Communist leaders living in mansions from Long Island to Los Angeles. He cites George Marshall, Albert Maltz, John Howard Lawson, Harry Sacher, Dalton Trumbo, Alex Bittelman, and Ring Lardner Jr., noting house values from forty thousand to two hundred thousand dollars as contrasts to alleged proletarian life. The piece casts the party elites as detached from workers while courting public scandal.
