St Anthony's Hospital received word this morning that William Bynum American National Bank teller is in slightly better condition after a Wednesday night accident. He fell from a moving car while standing on the running board holding material to make a ping pong table due to suction from the passing vehicle.
John Winters, county commissioner, was reported to be improving at Northwest Texas Hospital after a previous warning of pneumonia. The bulletin noted his condition had stabilized and he remained under hospital care.
Moscow June 4. The Komintern today ended its long quarrel with the Second Socialist International and proposed a united front for action against German and Italian intervention in Spain. San Francisco June 4. The Most Rev Jean Marus Laval auxiliary Catholic Bishop of New Orleans died today at St Mary's Hospital.
Mozelle Cherry is reported doing nicely this morning after a major operation yesterday at St. Anthony's Hospital. At her bedside are her sons Blair Cherry and Alton Cherry with spouses and their daughter Joan of Midland Texas, plus two sisters Mrs Tony Couie of Lubbock and Mrs Miller of Eldorado Oklahoma.
Unconfirmed reports from Manila indicate the town of Rabaul in British New Guinea was destroyed by an earthquake and tidal wave. The account appeared in indirect private advices to Manila newspapers.
Flood conditions eased as Two Panhandle highways reopened. Highway No. 5 from Dalhart to Texline and Highway 86 west to Tucumcari were passable though motorists faced slick roads. Mud blocked Highway 66 near Acrian for about a day and Highway 60 near Hereford to Clovis remained impassable. rainfall varied from half to 1.5 inches on the South Plains. In Texas, a death from lightning occurred with injuries to others amid rains, a tornado and hail.
The Salvation Army drive for a 5000 dollar brick home is at the halfway point. Board members meet tomorrow afternoon to review progress and double efforts to raise cash and pledges. Jim Williams is president and BE C Lacy at Amarillo National Bank handles pledges. Ten directors head the fund drive with Amarillo employers contributing, including Magnolia Petroleum Company where all staff donated.
U S senators from eight mid west and southwest states urged President Roosevelt to provide relief funds to combat a new drought that threatens 100 percent crop failures in parts of the dust bowl.
The morning hit and run near Amarillo involved officer notes from Hit Run case, reports identify a 1936 car with Oklahoma plates and a Texas license start, a boy witness age 10, a white hat driver in his 30s, and the Boxwell Brothers transport taking the victim Melzie Pearl to hospital, with her death at Boxwell Chapel.
An Enid Oklahoma farm laborer was found dead on the North Highway as an insurance adjuster claimed he drove the death car. The Potter County grand jury no-killed him, exonerating murder charges. Public appeals for more accident details followed KGNC broadcasts as officers checked garages for blood stains. Funeral arrangements are pending for the man’s relatives including siblings Bill Corbett and An gus Freeman.
Amarillo police detained two young women, Marian Mohler 18 and Thelma Bailey 16, found in the city while thumbing for a ride after authorities broadcast their descriptions from Oklahoma City. They were taken to the corporation court room as officers await word from Oklahoma City.
