Emissaries from Canton move toward Nanking to negotiate a joint Chinese response to Japanese aggression. Chiang Kai-Shek would consider Canton proposals for a unified war despite contradictory reports and claims of 250,000 troops in Hunan.
The House elected Rep William B Bankhead to succeed the late Rep Joseph W Burns as speaker after Burns heart attack and cerebral hemorrhage in the early hours. The funeral will be in Nashville with President Roosevelt attending. Burns pressed Congress to adjourn before the Republican convention next week, but his death may push session into next week or longer.
About 200 Amarillo Chamber of Commerce budget workers gathered at the Amarillo Hotel for the annual campaign to raise 30000 for the public opinion program. Major cards were assigned, crowds energized, and a five day drive began with volunteers forming new divisions and securing large corporate subscriptions.

T J Lipscomb of 1807 Harrison Street reported a prowler entered his home last night and stole his pants containing bank deposit slips and $1 in cash. Police are questioning suspects.
Pampa marks its Centennial with Old Timers day activities including a round-up with early settlers, square dances, a relic auto race rodeo and horse show. The day features a tea by Pioneer women, Old Timers parade, fiddler contests Panhandle, El Dorado performances, a pyrotechnic Indian fight finale and dancing.
President Roosevelt signs two record peacetime defense bills totaling over 1.1 billion dollars for the Navy and Army. Navy funding increases enlisted strength to 100,000, adds 333 planes, 12 destroyers and six submarines. Army funds raise troops to 165,000, add 565 aircraft and coast defense improvements.
Hollywood—Adolphe Menjou and wife Verree Teasdale consider renting a hospital suite on a yearly basis as illness persists. Teasdale was rushed in for an emergency appendectomy and will stay about a month though her condition is satisfactory. The couple have spent much time in hospitals since last summer. Teasdale will join Menjou at the studio after recovery. Austin—J W Friedman, Rice Institute football player, paid 125 to registry and agreed to pay 25 monthly for child support beginning July 1 after divorce obtained in 1935.

Joe D. Navarro, a Fort Worth man, was indicted by a Potter County grand jury for failure to stop and render aid after a car struck 77 year old Mrs. W. M. Thomas on Milam Street. Navarro is in jail. Benny Shaw was also indicted yesterday on two burglary counts and remains in county jail.

Aziz Phoenix report states Irving La Zarr a former dancer with Sally Rand's troupe shot Donna Park of Los Angeles a blond dancer here and then killed himself with the same gun. Justice of the peace Nat McKee called it murder death by own action and an inquest unlikely.
