Funeral services for Cadet Aston Leroy Smith killed in an army airplane crash near Williams Field Phoenix will be held tomorrow at 7 PM at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Rev. Frederick A. Foster will officiate with pallbearers Howard Horner C M Figh Roy M. Rose E C Blakey Ferman Head and M A Perry. The cortege will be received by N S Griggs and Sons. Air Force Glider School guard of honor will attend. Smith son of Mrs Marie Sessions and Roy H. Smith was born May 2 1922 in Amarillo and attended Texas A & M before enlistment in the U S Army Air Corps. He was under age for flight at enlistment and had reached corporal in the ground forces. He was a member of St Andrew's Church and is survived by two grandparents.
Hotel proprietors and hotel men in Amarilla will meet Monday night to confer with peace officers who will explain all provisions of the May Act. At the first conference sheriffs and police chiefs explained the act to taxicab owners and operators. Federal legislation aims to control prostitution in military areas. There will be several conferences with special groups invited.
A federal grand jury charged Herbert Karl Friedrich Bahr and eight foreign associates with forming an international spy ring. The indictment cites offices in Madrid Zurich Rio de Janeiro Istanbul and Stockholm and accuses conspiracy to commit espionage against U S war industries and armed forces.
Lakeland Ledger under the heading Winchell Was Right publishes an editorial praising Walter Winchell for warnings about German Bunds in the United States. The piece defends his late nightly broadcasts as patriotic and calls for earlier public alarm to counter the emerging threat.
G Robin son of Arizona, known as The World’s Happiest Man, says happiness comes from a movable home a bed regular meals and work to keep the mind busy. A 50 year prospector he travels with a wagon and three burros Baldy Red and Grandma his self supporting outfit averaging about 25 miles a day while chasing the mother lode and posing for pictures when needed.
E. W. Davis director of the University of Minnesota mines experiment station warned that northern Minnesota high grade iron ore deposits may be exhausted before the decade ends. He urged federal and state action to forestall a serious ore shortage and conserve remaining open pit high grade ore.
The Medieval Academy of America honors Dr. John M. Manly posthumously with the Haskins medal for editing The Text of the Canterbury Tales. Manly, a University of Chicago English professor who died in 1940, is praised for his text edition surpassing other medieval editors in reliability and scope. Citation signed by Tatlock LaPiana Beeson.
Davis warns that at war production rates known ore reserves in the Lake Superior district may run out by 1950 without government financing. He favors advancing Minnesota taconite projects to utilize vast low grade reserves and avert shortages. Separately, condor pilots plan their first annual convention in Tokyo. The city of Amarillo announced a test water well is being drilled on the Brinkman farm two miles southwest of the city. City manager A. P. Hancock says the tests aim to determine if a sufficient supply exists and notes test wells cost about 400 dollars versus several thousand for a permanent well.
