Unions oppose any effort to reduce wages
Washington July 28 The Railway Labor Executives Association warned that organized railroad labor will resist any move to cut wages while the administration upholds its stance against a lower wage scale. They urged the Interstate Commerce Commission to consider a rail rate increase on its merits, noting rail wage reasonableness was unfairly injected into the petition. The group argued many railway workers remain unemployed or underemployed, and that high profits and low wages drive a national low mood. The White House affirmed that administration policy on maintaining wages remains unchanged.
