Drought Relief Developments Prompt Policy Debate

Washington July 27 two drought relief moves emerged amid the crisis. The Bankhead cotton reduction act may be scrapped as crop losses rise beyond the 10.46 million bales limit and a major expansion of the cattle buying program is planned with Secretary Wallace stating purchases of 4 to 7 million cattle. Officials expect continued AAA farmer aid despite possible administration changes. Some land relocation efforts are underway with thousands of acres eyed for purchase. Groundwater shortages push deep-well drilling as a temporary fix while enforcement of the Bankhead Act remains in force unless southern farmers push for repeal.
