Runoffs Set In Potter County Contests After Unofficial Totals

Final unofficial counts from last Saturday show Potter County moving to runoffs in two races. Top vote getters include L R Cherryhomes and Fon Galther for sheriff while Hubert Cole and John Halley vie for county commissioner in Precinct No 1. Other wins include Ray Daniel defeating B B Brooks for Precinct No 3 commissioner, and John Morris reelected in Precinct No 4.

Airfield Talks Set for Amarillo Airport Decision

J D Church district engineer for the Civil Aeronautics Administration will visit Amarillo next Monday for a city commission meeting on the English Field airport. Government guidance suggests delaying the 350000 airport program until a new 250000 terminal is built, with Mayor Hagg favoring the runway plan and the mayor, commissioners, and city manager to meet Church.

Action for a North Amarillo post office has been deferred due to lack of satisfactory facilities and lease. Amarillo postmaster James Ely says the plan is canceled for now, with contract stations in local stores as alternative. Bid submissions to Mr. Ely are urged soon.

Barron Injured In Car Crash Near Des Moines

Robert Louis Barron former Amarillo Philharmonic director and Amarillo College instructor was seriously hurt when his car hit a concrete bridge upright on Highway 87 near Des Moines NM about 40 miles north of Clayton. He lost consciousness and was transported to Clayton Hospital then Glockner Hospital Colorado Springs with a fractured hip and possible internal injuries. His condition improved to favorable by noon.

Lead contest for Seventh Court of Civil Appeals attention in Panhandle

The race between James G. Lumpkin and Ernest O. Northcutt for associate justice of the Seventh Court of Civil Appeals drew the most interest. With 34 counties reporting, Lumpkin led Northcutt by about 715 votes as unofficial totals showed 45,512 to 44,797. Lumpkin, the incumbent, held the north district while Northcutt led in the south. Amarillo backed Lumpkin as Lubbock backed Northcutt. still, early returns from Cochran County swung the tally. The outcome remained in doubt with several counties not yet counted.
