Amarillo backyards join county-wide effort as more hopper poison becomes available. Since two weeks ago residents have used much of the mixture, with 19,000 pounds total in the county and over half distributed. The mixing station will reopen at 8 am and the poison will be distributed on county agent orders. Some ingredients come from the federal government.
Witnesses described about 190 officers clearing a main plant approach as strikers faced patrols. A Mount Edwards officer Rowley Oker was struck, then returned to charge a crowd of 300. Police faced rocks and a 5,000 strong protest before delivering a pro test to Mayor Burton.
A Federal Trade Commission hearing will be held in Amarillo on August 23 to probe alleged misleading advertisements by automobile firms. Otis B. Johnson, secretary of the Commission, notices the hearing with Examiner Joan L. Horner presiding in the federal building. The Chicago filed charge names General Motors Corporation and others over billboard imagery and price quotes for deluxe versus cheaper car models.
A burglary at 2212 Hayden Street yielded a Swiss watch and chain valued at 500 a bracelet worth 90 and another piece valued at 20 total 600. The break in was found Sunday morning. A separate theft at Central Grocery 400 Past Tenth Avenue involved broken cartons of cigarettes and a small radio was taken from Third Avenue and Grant Street.
A three month old white and blue Fox Terrier named Joet with a harness is missing. Call 4481 with any information for a reward. Other sections show a personal letter about correspondence and work wishes to Tack.
Potter County 4-H Club girls exhibited handmade shoe and hat racks at a clothing show last week and the display remains in the South western Public Service Company show windows on Taylor Street. The arrangement was by Mildred Scott Eunice Bell Charlotte Dammier and Freda Crawford of the Soncy 4-H Club under county home demonstration agent Miss Mary Sitton.
The Agricultural Adjustment Administration calls ever-normal granary legislation the next logical step in farm policy. AAA head H R Tolley says current soil conservation fails to stabilize production against shortages and surpluses, leaving farmers vulnerable. Chairman Marvin Jones introduces an ever-normal granary bill in Congress as an alternative to a farm bureau federation proposal.
A New Mexico delegation led by Senator Carl A. Hatch and Representatives Dennis Chavez and John J. Dempsey met with President Roosevelt in Washington to discuss financing the $6 million Areh Hurley irrigation and reclamation project near Tucumcari. They argued the project is needed and debated funding sources between land allotment and relief.
Washington July 24 The Roosevelt Supreme Court vacancy attracts renewed talk as Senator Robert LaFollette of Wisconsin emerges as a possible choice. The 42 year old senator and his brother Governor Phil LaFollette joined Roosevelt on a Potomac weekend cruise while the President said he had not yet made any appointment.
Los Angeles July 16 The renowned Italian Spanish soprano Amelita Galli-Curci plans a comeback after a two year layoff from a golfer operation. She is booked for a heavy fall schedule in major Northwest and Pacific Canal cities with a late spring tour and has received flattering reviews.
Federal agents detained William Wet, a 40 year old Puerto Rican, on a charge of sending a series of letters to President Roosevelt that threatened to disrupt the Democratic party. No explicit threats to the President were found in the letters.
Dr W Forrest Dutton returns from a three week vacation with his children Donald Dorothy Jane and Helen. They spent ten days in Yellowstone country and later toured Iowa and Illinois visiting relatives sharing notes on fishing and crops observed along the trip.
Captain M. L. Berry returned to his courthouse office today after a vacation to Austin and South Texas. He leads the Panhandle division of the state highway patrol. Mrs. Berry accompanied him on the trip.
Chicago reports 1 148 ears of new wheat moved into the market for inspection and sale as part of the midsummer grain movement. This follows a tight season with buyers watching for quality and price signals.

Six men faced trial on charges from harboring criminals to first degree murder after a special grand jury probe into a crime wave. Thomas J. Hutto of Dallas and A. O. Wheatley of Fl Dorado were indicted for murder in the slaying of Policeman J A Yocom. Hutto wounded in the gunfight after a $60 drug store holdup. Hutto and Paul Carpenter were also indicted for robbery. Berger, Tex, charged with kidnapping a Texarkanian.
The pick of the Loyalist army engaged west of Madrid to halt the fiercest Nationalist assault in over a year of civil war. The battle raged as both sides clashed, signaling critical moments on the Madrid front.
George Bernard Shaw marked his eighty first birthday in Malvern England today. He showed defiant vitality despite hints he might be near obituary time and declined to discuss health beyond saying he is all right for his age.
Aviation Cadet Arthur B. G. Rigler, a reserve student from Plainview, was killed when his training plane crashed at the naval air station in Pensacola Florida on July 26.
In Raynmdville Texas three doctors certified that King Ranch foreman George Durham aged 42 died of a heart attack Sunday. The death had sparked rumors of gunfire and an armed guard perimeter around the ranch amid local tension. Undertaker N Howard confirmed the report as unfounded.
Testimony in the long running United Hydro-Carbon Co v Texas Pacific Fuel and Oil Co case began in federal court this morning. The 1930 suit alleges breach of contract and Judge James C. Wilson will continue the hearing this afternoon.
A Texas Ranger named Fenner was suspended after seizing a photographer's camera at a Raymondville court hearing. The Public Safety Commission affirmed action by Cal H. M. Carmichael, suspending Fenner along with three other officers who had been held in contempt by Willacy County court and given suspended jail terms.
Four negro boys freed last week of assault charges in the Alabama Scottsboro cases arrived in New York to a raucous welcoming by 2 000 to 3 000 demonstrators. Their attorney Gemuel Lei Bowitz led the crowd as police lines were breached and the platform crowded with cheering supporters.
The Los Angeles list names Thomas B. Rifer an electrical engineer and X ray martyr who died after a decade of suffering and 540 operations. His wife Bertha says he knew he was burning to death yet kept researching and demoed before lead screens were common. He felt his work justified his pain.
Mrs Earl Webb and her two month old daughter Shire Mae Webb of 1708 West Fourth Avenue were injured in a two car collision at Fifth Avenue and Jefferson Street at 12 10 this morning. The husband Charles Webb and Joe Fogg of Bushland escaped injury. Mrs Webb suffers a shoulder injury and the infant has a leg in a cast while both drivers were treated at St Anthony's hospital.
July 26 report says the nation's first mass attack on the syphilis plague began with a poll of 250 000 people on submitting to free secret blood tests. Dr Louis Schmidt invited 5400 physicians under Mayor Kelly’s control committee to join the US Public Health Service campaign. Authorities will poll about 1 000 000 Chicagoans on secret tests.
A criminal investigator from the Department of Public Safety is assigned to the Panhandle area. Neil Arthur, a state officer for five and a half years, now heads the DPS office in the courthouse. He oversees districts served by Amarillo and Lubbock highway patrols, and he and Mrs. Arthur reside at 1617 Harrison Street.
A strong quake shook a wide area of Mexico causing material damage with few casualties, reports say. Officials noted the tremor occurred today with shaking felt across the capital and surrounding regions.
