A 72 year old former Kentucky Democrat congressman testified he had never taken a dime illegally during a hearing. All defendants were released on $2000 bail pending appeals after delayed sentencing as lawyers sought a new trial and mercy from the court.
May was found guilty on July 3 after an 11 week trial of taking 53 634 07 in bribes from the Murray and Henry Garsson. The Garsson brothers were also convicted and faced penalties while May proclaimed his innocence and pleaded mercy from Judge Schweinhaut. He said no money came to him and warned incarceration would ruin his grandchildren’s education.
The Amarillo city commission, meeting in secret session, examined charges from about 20 firefighters against Fire Chief Ed Wilson. A decision was expected today as the probe neared its close with three commissioners assessing the testimony.

A 20 year old Tulsa veteran Walter Johnson lost his left arm in a two phase crash two miles north of Tulsa. The first collision involved Johnson in a 1937 Plymouth and a southbound gasoline transport driven by W D Turner of Lubbock. A second crash with a second transport hurled Johnson from a pickup as his ambulance crew prepared to rush him to hospital. Johnson later died? No, he survived and was transferred to Amarillo Veterans Hospital.

Indonesian forces burn great areas in western Java as Dutch mop up operations continue. Dutch troops seize Pasuruan on the north Java coast and occupy nearly a dozen island villages around Bandong. Superintendent Charles M. Rogers announces school year begins September 4 with junior and senior high registration on September 2 and 3 and elementary enrollment on September 3. Teachers will assemble a week before opening and complete year plans by August 25.
Two ex Army sergeants face federal grand jury indictments for stealing secret documents from the Los Alamos atomic project. Named defendants are Ernest Wallis of Chicago and Alexander Van Der Luft of Mount Lebanon Pennsylvania.
The Texas State Board of Pardons and Paroles voted two to one against recommending clemency for Dr. W. R. Newton of Cameron in the assault to murder case involving Dr. Roy Hunt of Littlefield. Board Chairman Abner L. Lewis supported a full pardon, while Walter Strong and R. A. Schmid opposed. The doctor holds a 30 day reprieve granted by Gov. Beaufort H. Jester to protect patients.
veteran director Bill Beechler resigns from the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce and the Tri-State Fair Association for health reasons. Chamber board accepts the resignation with thanks. Tri-State directors have not acted. Beechler served over 20 years in both organizations. Chamber endorses a $750,000 Northwest Texas Hospital addition plan.
Keen Johnson submitted a resignation letter to President Truman announcing his departure from the post of undersecretary of labor effective August 1. He stated he will return to private industry.
Amarillo police sponsor a safety traffic school and plan a Hot Rods Club meeting at 7 30 p m Monday at Ellwood Park bandstand. Over 50 hot rods operate in Amarillo with speeds feared to exceed 100 mph, some clocked at 125 mph, as sponsors outline club rules to expel reckless drivers.
Rescue teams pulled the last three bodies from Old Ben Coal Mine No. 8, raising dead to 27 after a blast. Twenty-six miners died in the shafts filled with gas and one more worker died at a hospital. Illinois suffered its second major mine tragedy this year, with Centralia No. 5 mine disaster last March 25 killing 111.
Temperatures rise back into the mid summer range with highs of 90 then 94 later in the day and 97 by tomorrow. Pampa reports 0.66 inches of moisture last night though rainfall may have missed local gauges. Weather official H C Winburn notes showers likely occurred elsewhere in the Panhandle.
At Lake Success July 25, Soviet delegate Andrei Gromyko argued the United Nations Security Council cannot compel Balkan states to cooperate with the proposed border commission. US deputy Herschel Johnson warned that noncompliance could trigger enforcement measures under Chapter Seven, while Gromyko said sovereignty blocks such action and that only Chapter Seven sanctions would force cooperation if needed. The dispute signals Yugoslavia Albania and Bulgaria may resist the watchdog plan backed by the United States.
