Psychiatrist Examines W B Parks In Jail Shooting
W B Parks admitted shooting a stranger in Ellwood Park yesterday afternoon after an argument over birds and organized labor. He was held without bail in connection with the shooting of R K Garner, 40, of 220 North East Eighth, who remained in serious condition at Amarillo Osteopathic Hospital with wounds to the neck, right forearm, and left shoulder. Garner bleed too much to allow bullet removal. Parks surrendered to Deputy Murphy Hurd at the sheriff's office.

Architect Merle Jones Dies in Amarillo at 37
Merle Jones aged 37 of 1117 Hayden died at 7:25 p.m. in St. Anthony's Hospital after four months of ill health. Born January 30, 1913 in Comanche County, he moved to Lubbock, graduated from Texas Tech in 1936 with a BA in architecture, and joined Townes and Punk in Amarillo in 1937. He married Dixie Reynolds in 1940.

Marine Corps issues 10 day alert for active duty units
The Marine Corps ordered organized reserve ground units to be prepared for active duty on 10 days notice. HQ will select units to receive the first call, marking the first general alert among the armed services since President Truman’s authorization. A spokesman said no units have been ordered yet, but preparations are underway. Earlier reports indicated some units had been called up to report for duty within 10 days. At Newport News Lt. Melvin Toothman was assigned to Fort Eustis duties.
