The 31 year old from Galveston earlier tested aircraft fuel use and mechanicals at home with his aunt and uncle in Santa Monica. He had rebuilt a 1929 plane costing about $1200, including two old engines, and later flew from New York to Ireland after a reckless but celebrated detour inspired by Lindbergh.
