The Globe notes General Motors sold 840,481 cars in the first half of 1927 versus 620,190 in 1926 and 96,360 in 1925, predicting a big autumn for Henry Ford’s new model. It cites Ford’s claim Americans can absorb two million new cars yearly, while Rogers jokes about car ownership.
In Nice France on July 19 a bomb exploded outside the building housing the American consulate. No injuries and only slight damage occurred. Police opened an investigation as authorities suspected sympathizers of Sacco and Vanzetti behind the attack, following similar incidents abroad after the Massachusetts murder conviction.
Tonight and Wednesday partially cloudy. Temperature extremes a year ago were 91 and 65 degrees. Hourly temperatures today run from 66 at 7 am to 95 at 1 pm. The Coffee Shop at the Amarillo hotel is Famous for Food.
United Press reports a New York to Spokane air race set for September 19 to 21 with about 100 entrants aimed at the Pulitzer cup events. Two classes based on horsepower will compete as free agents, barnstormers, and large firms receive city support for fuel and oil. Roosevelt field hosts the start with class A planes taking off in ten-bird groups at five minute intervals begin September 19.
In Hutchinson county the Prairie Oil and Gas well at Sanford in Section 85, Block 46, was shot out at daylight after ten wells burned this year. Tex Thornton, who was badly scalded earlier, was shot by an associate while Thornton had prepared the well for the operation. Thornton endured a restless night as he heals from severe burns on his feet.
J Ogden Armour, long ill at the Carlton hotel London, shows signs of recovery as of today though still too weak to receive visitors. He is under care of Lord Lawson, physician to the king, and only his wife can visit.
Tomorrow is the final day for brake testing per C E Luce head of the traffic department. Tests run on East Sixth Street just south of the Municipal Auditorium from 9 am to 7 30 pm. Fines for poor brakes range from 10 to 200. Yesterday many cars failed brake checks and police refused to pass them until adjusted. A non braking car rear ended a test car, underscoring the need for the program.
Two American reconnaissance planes were hit by bullets on a Marine mission from Managua. One plane landed at Ocotal after a punctured fuel tank, then refueled and left. Gunner Albert Munseh guided the crippled craft to safety and relayed word that General Sadino, a Liberal leader, was attacking Ocotal as troops moved toward the town.
The Associated Press reports that Dr. H. Y. Benedict, senior dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, was chosen president of the University of Texas by the board of regents to succeed Dr. W. M. Splawn. Benedict, born November 14, 1869 in Louisville, earned UT degrees in 1892 and 1893, studied at Virginia and Harvard, and obtained a Baylor law degree in 1920. He married Ada Stone of Henderson, Texas in 1900.
In Austin on July 19 the highway commission and state board of control reached agreement in a joint conference. The board awarded contracts for road machinery totaling more than 1.3 million dollars, or just under the commission’s recommended total. The item notes Griggs and Blackburn ambulances with phone contacts 250 and 21.
The Globe News plans a live running account of the Sharkey versus Dempsey fight in Yankee Stadium this Thursday. Fans can attend as streets are roped off for a party with megaphone coverage of all preliminaries and the main event. The broadcast will also reach WDAG radio and listeners connected by a special AP wire feed to The Globe News office.
Mrs Minnie Fisher Cunningham of Galveston secretary of the National Democratic women's executive committee plans a 1928 U S Senate bid against Earle B Mayfield of Austin. Cunningham, a leading suffrage advocate, is viewed as a powerful Texas woman politician and her move sparks talk of rival candidates including former Governor C B Colquitt.
A party of fifty eight Ohio cattle feeders toured the Panhandle, praised Amarillo and LX ranch barbecue. They arrived by Santa Fe for breakfast at the Amarillo hotel, inspected ranges and breeding herds, and planned a two week cattle tour ending tonight at Fort Worth and Denver. A rock Springs relief fund suit was filed in Edwards county.
Sheriff R O Queen of Channing arrived to transport Milton H Henson from Amarillo to Channing for further questioning in the Ralph M Davis death. Davis was found on Fort Worth and Denver tracks near Channing on July 19 after Henson said in writing they rode a westbound freight on July 9 the night before.
Sheriff Miller of Oldham County asked Governor Dan Moody to issue requisition papers to bring Joe Alvaredo back to Texas on robbery charges stemming from the May 27 Wildorado bank holdup. Arrested in Tulsa on a warrant from Oldham, he is expected to resist extradition. Alvaredo, a former Federal narcotics agent and Mexican revolutionary figure, has ties to Mexican officials and is serving a seven-year Oklahoma sentence for a store robbery. he formerly worked as a car salesman locally.
P J Dameral secretary of the local B of L E reports to a Globe reporter that the rank and file back grand officers in reorganizing the BE bank finances. He says no official assessment, unofficially no assessment, assets frozen but bank is in good shape. House cleaning underway, press sensationalism disputed, rights of members will be protected.
Farwell Texas July 19 jury selection for Bob Hicks Friona rancher accused of robbery in the Friona bank heist is to be completed from a 60 member panel and a regular panel despite missing two witnesses. State witness R M Cummings pleaded guilty to aiding the robbery and received 15 years. Hicks is represented by Alex Mood.
The Meyers case involving local attorney Rhea C Meyers and police officers over a courthouse lawn beating is postponed as District Attorney W J Flesher, to conduct the inquiry, has not returned to the city and the time remains indefinitely delayed. The incident occurred last Friday when Meyers accompanied officers taking a client to jail and reportedly engaged in an affray with them. Griggs ambulance, Phone 259. "famous for Food." Amarillo prepares to assume full control of its water system by August 1 with city deposits required from users equal to two months bills. Rates are expected to drop, with potential residential charges around 20 to 50 cents per unit, as meters, staff, and new equipment are readied for the transition.
