Allied carrier strikes and naval bombardments hit Honshu within 80 miles of Tokyo for a second day. U.S. and British fleets supported by bombers pummeled airfields factories and military sites as Japanese defenses appeared on alert.
A U S Third Fleet force led by the Iowa and Towa fired nine 16 inch salvoes for 50 minutes along Tokyo's coast. The dawn withdrawal near Mito left no Japanese counterattack as intense barrages hit Hitachi steel works and related facilities. Fire Controlman Robert S. Dennis fired the first salvo, while weather and fog limited visibility yet failed to dampen gunnery.
At Potsdam the Big Three resumed discussions focusing on the war with Japan as the primary issue. President Truman signaled quickly ending Pacific conflict as essential, while officials noted preliminary exchanges and limited releases amid censorship. Leaders planned to set the order for resolving major questions at the conference.

Supreme Court refused to review a ruling on whether Potter County may redeem and resell about 250000 in county hospital bonds before maturity. Mrs Gertrude Hill Gavin and insurers had challenged the move. earlier district court allowed redemption, while the court of civil appeals reversed. The court also denied a writ of error.
Washington Democrat Rep. De Lacy announced after a conference with Secretary of Agriculture Anderson that no further sugar shipments will be sent to Franco Spain. He cited 62 000 tons delivered last year and urged stopping use for wines and brandy while democratic nations need sugar for preserving foods.
