Colima dispatches report a 14 year old Mexican boy Adolfo Villanueva captured by bandit Marmolejo. After escaping, he was recaptured and compelled to dig a grave at a mountain retreat and then shot. The bandit leader declared the grave was the boy’s own before firing.
Arthur Brisbane reflects on global conflict rumors and public mood. A survey of June sales by 45 chain stores shows Sears Roebuck leading with 25.7 million, Woolworth and Montgomery Ward following. Wheat prices rise to 1.36 per bushel as farmers face losses, while European peasants retain folk beliefs at change of religious era. The state claims the devices foster gambling. merchants often refuse to redeem tokens. If found illegal, seizing all similar machines in the city is likely. Gilbert Swan, New York columnist, visiting Amarillo, gathers material on Panhandle figures and will publish later. He toured Palo Duro canyon with Henry Harding and met Old Tack.
London July 18 King George continues to progress satisfactorily after his recent operation as officially announced from Buckingham Palace today.
A 10 year old boy who had been reported kidnapped sat eating peanuts in the Happy Texas movie emporium while authorities across three states hunted for him. He watched episode 19 of The Proud Beauty before returning home and assuring anxious parents that all was well.
A terrific explosion in Hammond Indiana today demolished the Goldie department store, a three story building in the foreign section. Estimated damage is 300000 dollars. Police suspect labor trouble. Roof was lifted, walls caved, debris scattered, nearby windows shattered. No injuries reported. It is the second major Hammond blast in two years and ties to the State Theater bombing case with William Kleighe serving a prison sentence.
Tallahassee July 18 the state banking department announced the State Bank of Bowling Green Fla failed to open today. This brings total bank failures to sixteen in two days. Bowling Green bank listed capital and surplus 34000 deposits 300390.55 and assets 425168.41.
M. T. Hap Johnson, critically ill at St. Joseph Missouri after a hemorrhage, was reported improving slowly this morning. Attendants believe he is out of danger and continues to recover, according to word received here today.
In New Orleans the street car strike stalls as 13 unexploded dynamite sticks are found under the city gas main. Public Service Company resumes service with strike-breakers within a day or two, signaling a de facto rejection of the union’s arbitration offer. Carmen’s Union president Peyroux condemns violence and disclaims any union involvement.
A westbound Chicago Rock Island and Pacific train plunged into a swollen draw near Stratton Colorado after crossing a weakened bridge. Reports say seven to sixteen dead, with more than twenty injured as water flooded the car and rescuers worked through receding floodwaters. Aboard were Morris Gest and party, who are reportedly safe in Goodland awaiting transport. Local officials estimate recovery and relief efforts continue as authorities confirm the toll.
The West Texas chamber of commerce motorcade escorted by V. Vernon and Mason King visits Amarillo after touring Palo Duro Canyon then proceeds to Panhandle Pampa White Deer and Vernon with a luncheon and speeches by Andy Bourland B. M. Whitaker and Grady Shipp. The caravan began July 10 at Ballinger visiting San Angelo McCamey Rankin Fort Stockton Alpine Marfa Van Horn Carlsbad Artesia Hope Mayhill Cloud and resumes eastward with further stops and entertainment.
The fire department will give free shower baths to city children at Ellwood Park starting at 7 p.m. Tonight and on hot days. Fire hose will stream water on the playing children. Engines will be stationed at the park’s north side as authorized by the city commission.
J Perry of New Bedford Mass says he awoke before the Pullman car plunged through a bridge near Stratton Colo. He crawled through a broken window, clung to a railroad tie, and reached the bank amid rising floodwaters. He wore pajamas and later retrieved trousers with his watch stopped at 8 minutes to four. He expects to continue to Denver after rest.
Chicago July 18 The grain market opened with wheat slipping 1½ to 3 cents a bushel on Liverpool weakness but quickly recovered as Northwest weather news arrived. By end of first hour prices rebounded six cents from the low and stood about two cents above yesterday's close. December wheat reached 1.57, September 1.515, July 1.464.
