A northern Amarillo zinc refinery shows wartime growth with 780 workers daily and production rising from 68 to 4 500 tons this month. The plant fuels U S and British defense needs with zinc for brass, shells, ships, aircraft and gear.
About 200 pickets blocked the rear entrance of Lakes Steel Corp in ECORSE Michigan halting a shift of 6000 workers. Management called it an illegal wildcat strike by a small minority of the Steel Workers Organizing Committee. The plant shut at 8 PM pending a contract vote due tomorrow at 2 PM, union officials deeming it the best in the steel industry. SWOC pledges to seek early return to work within 24 hours.

Directors of the Panhandle Plains Historical Society will meet Thursday at 2 PM at the Amarillo Hotel in a special session called by Judge J. D. Hamlin of Farwell. They will discuss plans for completing the main unit of the museum on the West Texas State College campus at Canyon and expect construction to begin within weeks.
President Roosevelt asked Congress to adopt year round daylight saving time on regional or national basis to reduce power use. He cited a projected annual saving of 736 million kilowatt hours and urged eight Southern governors to implement daylight time to ease a severe regional power shortage.
