London reports British government, preoccupied with German and Italian fronts, is seeking to end the three year war in the East. A Singapore radio broadcast quoted acting Malaya governor S. W. Jones promising maximum effort to halt the war and avoid prolonging fighting. British officials caution the move does not signal a new policy toward Japan. Negotiations in Tokyo between Ambassador Sir Robert Craigie and Foreign Minister Arita focus on a general settlement, with Burma Road issues as a key element. Japan's navy barred shipping along parts of the Chinese coast south of Shanghai, prompting Britain to demand safe operation for its ships and hold Japan accountable for losses.
