Georgia probes closing of 43 banks in state
The Georgia state banking department investigates forty eight banks that have closed since Monday. Federal Judge Sanmeel heard a bankruptcy petition against Bankers Trust Company, operator for 120 state banks, with a temporary receivership named. The department blamed Hunters’ Trust Company for most closings, noting local conditions rather than bank instability. Bank of Umatilla charged Bankers Trust with $491,500 misused to fund investments and Florida lenders.
