The heat wave across nine Midwest and Great Lakes states drives deaths past 1,600 with $400 million in property damage. Hospitals run on emergency basis as two cities report extreme strain. Forecasters warn two more days of 100 degree heat. relief arrives in some areas from thundershowers and breezes.
Road boosters from the four corners of the Southwest met in Amarillo to celebrate the completion of Highway No. 5 linking the Gulf Coast with the Rockies. About 300 delegates from Denver to San Antonio attended a barbecue in Palo Duro Canyon.
In Fort Worth two daylight robbers armed with a gun held up cashier A L Feyster in Monnig's Department Store lobby at 9 AM. Feyster and clerk Lawrence Barnes were leaving with receipts when the two men demanded the cash bag containing 1500 dollars and 3000 dollars in checks. They fled in a waiting automobile heading west.
The American Federation of Labor executive council is poised to suspend the United Mine Workers and eleven allied unions. A vote was expected today or tomorrow with a substantial majority leaning toward action, as hotel lobby talk centered on suspension of all 12 unions in the committee for industrial organization.
John S. Farnsworth a former lieutenant commander in the U S Navy pleaded innocent today to a charge of communicating confidential naval information to a Japanese agent. Hoover said Farnsworth was arrested on a charge of selling naval secrets after undercover work and was to be arraigned before U S Commissioner Needham C Turnage. The case follows a recent conviction in Los Angeles of another former Navy man, Harry T Thompson, for conspiracy to commit espionage by providing clippings to a Japanese contact.
Strong detachments of mobile guardsmen forced from the streets as 100,000 Communists and Socialists gathered on the Champs Elysees to cheer the Bastille Day parade. Nationalists sang the Marsellaisse while police and Republican guardsmen barred clashes behind barriers.
Alvin Karpis, last Barker-Karpis leader in court, pleaded guilty to the kidnapping of William Hamm Jr., a St. Paul brewer. He changed from not guilty before trial after his capture in New Orleans on May 1.

His Speed of the Wind reportedly averaged 135 mph for 48 hours and may have covered about 6550 miles starting at 8 29 A M Sunday. AAA timers led by A C Pillsbury recorded a new 24 hour world record of 149.09612 miles.
Tupe lo scene of a disastrous tornado last April which cost 231 lives was struck today by a violent windstorm unroofing several buildings and causing extensive property damage.
Jean Well, 23, sits with detectives denying her claim of being branded by a vice ring killer. Police question her tale of binding, branding initials, gas set at her apartment, while investigators pursue leads in New York and Washington.
Louis R Glavis leaves his $2000 yearly post as Harold Ickes chief PWA inspector to head the Investigating Committee for the senatorial campaign. The resignation follows a long dispute with Ickes over public works policy and secrets.
Newark N J July 14 Attorney General David T Wilentz spent over an hour before the federal grand jury and said he discussed the entire Paul H Wendel kidnapping case with the panel after leaving.
Mary Astor files two legal actions in Los Angeles Superior Court seeking full custody of her four year old daughter Marilyn and return of 4250 dollars in securities from ex husband Dr Franklin Thorpe surgeon. She alleges Thorpe threatened to ruin her reputation unless she surrendered custody and securities rights. Thorpe obtained an uncontested decree of divorce on April 20 1935. Astor states she was mentally and physically sick at the time.
Be whiskered men and be bustled ladies from Tulia arrived in Amarillo for a highway rally inviting locals to Swisher County’s Forty-sixth Annual Rodeo on July 17 and 18. Rev. Hoyt Bowles urged attendance saying Tulia residents would stop milking their cows after 15 years.

Night Watchman John Cox shot and killed an unidentified man during an attempted service station robbery at Williams and Miller Station in Shamrock. A 15-year-old, Louis Kenner, held in Wheeler County jail after refusing to discuss the case. A billfold and photo found on the dead man, whose identity remains unknown. Fingerprints to be sent to authorities.
