General MacArthur's headquarters announced American losses in Korea to date at 42 killed, 192 wounded and 256 missing. The statement said exaggerations arose from wartime reporting and praised U.S. ground units for holding actions despite being outnumbered.
Dispatches report Communist tank columns driving toward mountain passes in central Korea to outflank American forces along the Kum River line before Taejon. General MacArthur described the move as a midnight communique describes the flanking action.
MacArthur says enemy forces seek to seize Tabek passes to break from Taegu to Taejon cutting supply lines to Kum River Americans and the Pusan port. American and Australian air ground units contend with North Korean armor and artillery in worsening weather as Seoul reports reinforcements. Koreans withdraw east of Kum amid a broader Chinese style flanking maneuver.
Lt. Gen. Walton H. Walker, a Texas tank expert and 60, takes command of UN ground forces in Korea, succeeding Maj. Gen. William Dean. Walker, Eighth Army commander since 1948, assumed charge at a South Korea advanced post as MacArthur announced the change. Observers say the move reflects buildup. Dean returns to division command. Walker, Belton native, parallels Patton in tank love and style, holds three stars once owned by Eisenhower and Patton, and has 21 decorations including the Silver Star. He led the 20th Corps in France and commanded the Fifth Army before Japan posting.
The Air Force reported a B-29 has been shot down by enemy fighters near Seoul, marking the first B-29 loss to combat. A USAF briefing officer cited radio contact with the downed plane’s pilot. Tokyo dispatches claimed 500 tons of bombs in a separate raid with all crew returning safely.
The US Weather Bureau reports for Amarillo and vicinity a sunny afternoon and Friday with cooler tonight and warmer Friday noon. Highs around 83 degrees, lows near 58, and 24 hour high in the 80s with a 60 degree low. Panhandle region to see decreasing cloudiness today and sunny drying Friday with scattered showers south and east.
A blind 38-year-old man from Monahans turned himself in to Sheriff W B McNerlin and confessed to the 1932 Quitaque Post Office burglary and a Havana Ark bank robbery. Postmaster Stanley E Hedrick and local officials linked the case to earlier suspects but no arrests followed. Slightly less than $300 was taken.
Burglars broke into Pleasant Valley Grocery Store during the night through a rear window with an air conditioner unit and stole three hundred dollars in dimes and quarters kept in a cigar box in the meat case. Also taken were six cartons of cigarettes a large piece of cheese butcher knives and shotguns. Police investigated the case.
Panhandle towns soaked by last night and yesterday’s downpours with 2 to 4 inches in the west Amarillo area. West Sixth flooded near Northwest Texas Hospital, cars stranded, and Avondale streets turned canals. Forecasters predict clearing skies, cooler tonight, and warmer Friday as farmers eye resumed field work.
A 13 year old Amarillo boy Charles Ray Morey proposes weed control and trash barrel covers to combat polio in a Mayoral contest entry. Separately a postal theft investigation charges Charles Tolios, a substitute letter carrier, with embezzling cash from letters at the Amarillo post office. Tolios is arraigned with a $500 bond and remains in Potter County jail.
Wichita Falls civic leaders tour Amarillo to study city government tax structure. Delegation, including Mayor Harold Jones, Aldermen and officials, visits Lubbock and Amarillo with luncheon at the Herring Hotel hosted by Mayor Gene Klein. Page 14 reference follows.
