A blast in a windowless jet engine test cell at a government plant killed seven, wrecked a 20 by 50 foot cell block, and toppled interior partitions. Fire halted after two hours as debris scattered and delicate equipment was jarred yet later began humming nearby.
From a frontline post near Kaesong Korea a young North Korean officer drew a bayonet line and blocked 20 Allied correspondents demanding they retreat to their vehicles while Chinese troops watched. Capt Henry McAllister refused to yield and ordered the convoy back after failure to obtain new orders.
Labor leaders led by CIO secretary treasurer James Carey backed Truman administration wage and price controls as Congress weighs a Defense Production Act. Green and other union heads warned an unworkable bill could doom controls while urging authority to enforce reasonable price limits. Mrs. Sarah N. Hall eighty five and widow of Judge R. Walker Hall died last night at her daughter’s home in Warsaw Missouri after years of failing health. She moved to West Texas with her husband in 1888 and later lived in Vernon and Amarillo. Judge Hall served as chief justice of the Seventh Court of Civil Appeals for more than twenty five years.
Amarillo school officials warn of a broad teacher and nurse shortage for fall. 98 positions needed including 35 replacements and 58 new teachers, plus five nurses. 36 teachers have been selected and 62 openings remain. Primary grades 1 2 3 most affected. Educators cite wartime birth rise and training gaps.
Bail for 15 Communists, canceled by Judge Ryan, was reinstated by Judge Learned Hand of the U S Court of Appeals. The bail fund of the Civil Rights Congress of New York posted the bail, while Ryan had jailed three trustees for contempt for not revealing donors. Hand also set $10,000 bail each for Dashiell Hammett and Dr W Alphaeus Hunton pending appeal.
St Louis defeats New York 3 to 0 in nine frames as Johnson hits a homer for St Louis. Staley and Rice work for St Louis while Jansen and Webster toil for New York. Tonight Chicago meets Brooklyn Pittsburgh faces Philadelphia Cincinnati goes to Boston. American League Washington vs Detroit ongoing with late scores. New York visits Cleveland Boston plays Chicago in two, Philadelphia at St Louis in two.
The feature match in the Tri-State Senior Golf Tournament at Amarillo Country Club today had Chick Trout defending his title from Lupbock tied with Ted Franklin of Long Beach after five holes. Medalist Roy Allen led Amos Howard by three holes after four holes. Alfred Griggs and Tom Davis were even after four. George Hale edged A L Schrock two up after four. Dr. H C Johnson won by default over Olin Stewart. Winners advance to quarter finals tomorrow.

Vice Admiral C Turner Joy warned North Korea's Gen Nam Il that negotiations would halt until communist interference with UN personnel and convoys stops. Reports said half a million troops massed behind a steel ring in Korea’s west central front as UN commander Gen Matthew Ridgway watched the stalled talks.
The Communist radio in Peiping said Korean armistice talks were suspended because the Americans sent in 26 newsmen beyond the regular delegation, questioning American sincerity. It did not mention armed Red guards turning back the press party. As of 3 PM July 12 there was no indication UN representatives would continue negotiations.
General describes alert Kaesong stance with 400000 Red troops in the west central sector. Fighting limited yet UN patrols probe Red defenses as airstrips near completion for jet fighters. Negotiations suspended for a day amid ongoing casualties.
