U S and Britain Plan Evacuations in Abyssinia

London and Washington say they will coordinate evacuation of Americans and Britons from Abyssinia if war breaks out between Ethiopia and Italy. About 125 Americans, mostly missionaries, are in Ethiopia and some have left as relocation advisories go out. Britain seeks a diplomatic solution to the crisis led by Sir Samuel Hoare with a conference call to Joseph A C Avenel of the League of Nations.

National Geographic balloon project halted by sudden collapse

A giant National Geographic stratosphere balloon failed during final preparations near Rapid City South Dakota, rupturing the top and releasing helium. No injuries occurred but 375000 cubic feet escaped as investigators plan to inspect fabric and determine the cause of the 15 hour lead up to the planned 12 mile ascent.

Floods Claim Five Lives in Granada Colorado

Five bodies were recovered and seven people including a father and six children remained missing after floods caused by cloudbursts near Granada. The dead include Mrs. Alzada Karn and son Leo, Mrs. Anton Eder and son Glenn, and Ruth Eder. several other families may have been affected. Granada, a ranching town east of Lamar, saw water depths reach a foot or two but residents escaped in time.

Four Hundred in Strike at Boulder Dam

Four hundred carpenters and iron workers on Boulder Dam power houses struck for a free lunch hour. State law calls for an eight hour day, but the men demand a half hour lunch on company time. They refused to work until the issue is settled, with a meeting set between company officials and workers leaders.

Convict Wounded In Escape Effort at Texas Farm

Edwin McArthur a Galveston convict serving 10 years for burglary was shot and wounded at Retrieve prison farm hospital after an escape attempt. Capt. I K Kelley said McArthur fled after refusing to work and guards searched him. Coy Humphrey fired a shotgun, wounding him. McArthur has a recent escape attempt from Huntsville and is serving a third term.

Miss Sarah Conwell once affluent and now claiming losses of half a million dollars from investments since 1913 was freed after 19 days in county custody. She had been jailed for contempt of a 47th District Court ruling over an $18 700 loan stock suit and was released from Northwest Texas Hospital to her volunteer attorney James M Kernan amid unconfirmed settlement talks.
