War Food Administrator Marvin Jones said he is in the Panhandle to study the wheat transportation situation. He will urge the defense transportation director to adopt refrigerator cars to supplement box cars for moving the bumper crop.
British Canadian forces push across the Orne east of Caen and on the Cherbourg peninsula as U S troops reach the outskirts of St Lo. Reports say 54 000 prisoners taken since D Day with heavy losses on both sides amid renewed fierce fighting.
The Panhandle saw a few light showers yesterday. The U S Weather Bureau forecasts partly cloudy skies tomorrow and fair weather Thursday with temperatures near yesterday's highs and lows, a touch warmer on Thursday. Rain totals yesterday were Panhandle 0.07 inches, Follett 0.04, Spearman 0.05, Shamrock 0.01.
Two girls under 14 were abducted by two men in Amarillo while playing on North Taylor Street. They were driven to an isolated spot near Gem Lake, assaulted, clothes torn, then dumped on a muddy road. The car carried a Tennessee license. detectives seek suspects described as one large and heavy set and one slim. Grace Hodge, a policewoman, assisted the girls and a doctor examined them.
President Roosevelt announced that the French National Committee led by Gen Charles de Gaulle will hold de facto civil authority over liberated France under Eisenhower supervision. The U S will not recognize it as a provisional government and will keep full diplomatic stance. De Gaulle and his party arrived in Ottawa where Prime Minister King welcomed them.
Acting President Dario Echandia declared full powers to restore order after rebel officers detained President Alfonso Lopez in Pasto Narino. Gen. Julio Gaitan and another army moved toward Pasto, with 12,000 loyal troops, as demonstrations erupted nationwide.
Governor Thomas E. Dewey announced he will meet 25 Republican governors from other states in St. Louis on August 2 and 3 to discuss problems facing the country. The event is tied to the presidential campaign and GOP strategy.

Saturday charges were filed in a Friday night afray at the YWCA dance on Lincoln Street where McDowell and Sam K. Broyles Jr. were hurt. Broyles Sr. filed the complaint as investigators probe a North vs South Amarillo gang angle and possible further charges.
