A New York area murder case centers on Dorothea Matthews and Mark Gehr. Gehr shot at their Birch Hill cottage near Patterson after detectives and a friend confronted the door, killing Gehr's wife and wounding two private detectives. Gehr and Matthews were captured by Armonk police two hours later.
CHICAGO July 10 With one major rail walkout ended the nation faced possibility of another today. AFL switchmen had halted service on four roads and hampered a fifth, then were halted in two stages by government pressure. The strike was still in effect against the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. Federal court ordered 1,500 switchmen back to work, and three other unions met in Chicago to consider strikes for shorter hours and higher pay. A cooling off period ends Saturday and these unions may strike afterward.
A North Korean tank faced reports claim Soviet 40 ton models with 88 mm guns outrun and overrun American positions. Uprooted from darkness advances with 10 to 30 tanks, aided by gas and artillery, overwhelmed US lines before airstrikes or strafing could react. Notes on equipment, observers and veterans describe red tank tactics and uncertain Allied advisement.
Colombia reports at least 123 dead from four earthquakes in north Santander province. Up to date figures list Arboledas and Cucutilla severely damaged with dozens killed. Gov says many towns almost destroyed. Troops, doctors, and supplies airlifted as telegraphs fail and roads crack.
Police hunted thieves in Houston after a $1,500 burglary tied to a lifelong hobby of collecting dimes. The silver cache had been saved over the years, and the theft ruined the collector Christian's plans and routine.
The Associated Press reports scattered showers and torrential rain across Kansas and Nebraska. Up to 13 inches fell in seven hours causing five deaths and millions in damage, with York Nebraska hardest hit and Beaver Creek flooding a quarter of the town. National Guardsmen aided in rescuing about 200 people. floods also damaged Beaver Crossing and Abilene, wrecking railroad tracks and wheat crops valued at around 150000 dollars.
Seven American soldiers were found slain in a see-saw battle area in Korea. They were tied and shot in the face. Lt. D. C. Gates, a Texan, reported three mortar men and four ammunition carriers among the dead. The bodies were recovered as a "lost" battalion rejoined its regiment. General MacArthur announced the battalion was ready for action after rejoining.
In Korea, South Korean forces execute suspected guerrillas after rough punishment. UN observer Rankin and an Australian report two trucks with about 40 kneeling prisoners. A policeman describes the action as bashing backs and later execution in nearby woods.
A policeman described prisoners captured near South Korean lines as suspected guerrillas and said armed units in American clothes aiding the North Koreans were shot on the spot. As the convoy moved, officers dragged several bodies from a loading truck while a rifle beat against the backs of other prisoners in a second truck.
Washington dispatch reports American officials warn of a prolonged Korean conflict possibly spanning many months and involving up to 100,000 U S troops. Gen Douglas MacArthur orders alertes to nearby forces with 15 000 to 20 000 already mobilized and 30 000 to 40 000 in Korea or ready.
Washington reports American troops are building a line of no retreat to halt Communist penetration in Korea. An Army spokesman said the exact position is unknown, but the effort is under way based on latest Gen. Douglas MacArthur HQ reports from Tokyo. Ground may be given temporarily before halting and reversing.
Tokyo July 10 AP Lt Gen George E Stratemeyer reports ground forces Navy and Far East Air Force stopped North Koreans. FEAF commander says no targets beyond the boundary will be bombed but all within will be hit around the clock. 41 Communist planes destroyed or damaged and 123 tanks knocked out in 15 days. Allied losses include 20 combat planes and five transports plus 9 American airmen killed 5 wounded 12 missing. Jet fighters such as F 80 and F 51 shown value in close air support.
Scattered late afternoon and night thundershowers at Amarillo and vicinity today and Tuesday. Partly cloudy with warm temperatures, highs near 94 degrees, and lows around 68. More isolated storms possible in next two days with minor farm impact. West Texas similar, New Mexico partly cloudy with widely scattered showers and thundershowers.
