President Truman announced he will veto the Republican backed plan to cut income taxes by four billion dollars annually starting January 1. He would not recall Congress or call a special session but will work with leaders on displaced persons and flood control issues.
Prague reports indicate Czechoslovakia may withdraw from the European economic conference in Paris at Moscow's urging. Hungary also rejects the British French invitation amid postwar economic strains as 14 nations have accepted and a deadline looms.
An Amarillo family tragedy occurs near Stonewall Colorado as a kerosene stove explosion razes a cabin. Parents Mack and Naomi McCoy lose two children John 6 and David 9 months while Dixie Sue Conger 4 also perishes. Naomi is hospitalized with burns and shock. Mack is en route from Pennsylvania. Continuous fire leaves the cabin a charred ruin and neighbors describe the scene as chaotic and fatal.
Widely scattered thundershowers expected this afternoon and tonight across Amarillo and West Texas with partly cloudy conditions Friday. Panhandle and South Plains areas may see additional showers while Pecos Valley activity moves eastward. Temperatures remain mild with little change. New Mexico areas expect clear tonight then partly cloudy Friday with scattered showers in east and north portions.
The Ellwood Estate of Lubbock announced the purchase of the 126000 acre headquarters portion of the Bell Ranch near Tucumcari for over a million dollars. Col Leland Keeney and wife Harriett Ellwood Keeney and their two sons are buyers. sale includes all equipment stock and the Bell brand with transfer set for Sept 1.
Dallas Times-Herald editor Allen Merriam visits Amarillo with daughter and son-in-law Ralph and Mrs Ater. Ater now leads public relations for Santa Fe Western Lines. Merriam notes Amarillo’s growth since his last visit ten years ago.
Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson administered the oath to Marvin Jones of Amarillo as chief justice of the US Court of Claims. Jones, a former Democratic congressman and war food administrator, has served on the court since 1940 with attendance by James F. Byrnes Tom C. Clark Stanley Reed and Texas delegates.
Senator Baldwin says he hopes to bring House approved terminal leave bond legislation to the Senate next week. He will seek approval from the full armed services committee at the earliest opportunity, possibly at tonight’s meeting.
Taft disputed John L. Lewis's coal contract arguing it may not violate labor law and defended the law’s aim to allow contracts. Hartley called the agreement a possible collusion risking small operators. President Truman avoided comment. Southern operators joined, signaling resumption of coal production.
A draft leasing Tri-State Fair properties was handed to County Attorney Roy Snodgrass by attorneys for the fair association. The new proposal eliminates disputed features, seeks exclusive use of several buildings, and suggests a lease through 1948 with token rent, while banning shows for 60 days before the fall fair.
Scattered thundershowers dampened the Panhandle last night with Miami and the South Plains getting the heaviest totals. Weather forecaster H C Winburn says a dry cycle is ending and relief for dry conditions is coming, though wheat producers face high moisture and heavy grain. Temperatures hover around 89 today and 93 tomorrow as warm air from the south collides with a northern cold front. Rain totals over 24 hours ended 6:30 AM include Lubbock .91, Miami 1.29, Adrian .32, Shamrock .11, and Beaxer .10 in Oklahoma reports, with Clayton near 1.30 in eastern New Mexico.
Campaign buttons appeared today during Gov. Thomas E Dewey's vacation trip. At the Hotel Muehlebach Missouri and Kansas party leaders met with Dewey and New York governor Harry Darby to pin on slogans "Clean House with Dewey" and show support ahead of party sessions.
Lady Isabel Miller Lade was fined 2500 pounds after pleading guilty to attempting to smuggle a mink coat and other articles from New York to England.
The House approved a bill to make Speaker Joseph W. Martin, Jr. next in line for the presidency if President Truman cannot serve. The 265 to 11 vote follows Senate passage. the measure would place the Speaker after the Vice President in the line of succession, replacing the Secretary of State in that slot.
In Houston on July 10 a gift of 20,000 shares of Anderson Clayton common stock valued at one million dollars was donated to medical research by Undersecretary of State and Mrs Will F Clayton. Mrs Clayton announced the gift in Washington saying a large hospital outside Houston will benefit and the funds will support infantile paralysis research.
Detroit weekly automotive plant output is estimated at 65 559 passenger cars and 22 030 trucks. Last week production was 43 715 cars and 17 201 trucks due to Independence Day shutdowns.
Senator Hickenlooper said no material of substantial importance is missing from Oak Ridge Tenn. and the Atomic Energy Committee chair reported no unauthorized use of Los Alamos material by two sergeants. He added assurance there is no involvement of Oak Ridge in the Los Alamos theft case.
Nashville safety chief Lynn Bomar announced John T. Hurn who vanished in Nickajack Cave was located in New York City. Hurn’s disappearance was a hoax. he had been driven to Birmingham on July 1 and took a train to New York. Authorities traced the ruse through an informant and a telephone call.
