Five inmates led by Mac Swain escaped from Dewitt County jail in Cuero after Swain used a soap fashioned gun to force a janitor to unlock his cell. A home film caught fire from a lighted cigarette during an amateur show at R V McLeod's home in Hattiesburg Mississippi. Three children died Raymond Kahler aged 6 Marvin Massengale 7 and Bobby Fisher 4. Four others were seriously burned including Jean and Marlene Shamburger Betty Jean Belcher and Virgil Kahler.
