Pottsville Pa July 10 rescue teams attempting to reach three men entombed in the Lytle Coal company colliery at Lytle near here reported they had almost given up hope of finding them alive. Mine officials said they still expected to reach the men before noon as the mine was sealed by a gas explosion that wrecked the gangway and filled it with debris.
Ernest Gilpin, a summer White House cook at Cedar Island Lodge, asked Milwaukee court to excuse his appearance for desertion and cruelty charges in his divorce case, saying frying fish for the president keeps him too busy. The judge accepted the letter as his answer and ordered $12 weekly maintenance to his wife.
