Newsman Morton among Americans executed in Mauthausen camp
Joseph Morton AP war correspondent, captured after flying into Slovakia during a Czechoslovak uprising, was executed January 24 at Mauthausen on orders from Berlin. Nine other Americans and four Britons in the same group were shot. the camp commandant Zeireiss died trying to escape. The group endured torture and a brutal interrogation before death. A. I. Goldberg reported the Bratislava clip quoting Dr Lettric praising Morton as a heroic journalist and democrat. Morton had joined AP eight years prior and worked in Lincoln, Omaha, Cleveland, and New York.
