Missionary cites Japanese war fatigue and centralization in 1940

Miss Elizabeth Whewell, returning from a decade in Japan, tells Amarillo listeners that by 1940 most Japanese families had lost relatives to the war with China and that government and military leaders neglect the individual. She notes high literacy, government control of media, compulsory military training, and a dictatorial system tied to Shintoism, urging faith in Christ for democracy.

Exhibit on V-Mail To Be Shown Here

Beginning Monday the exhibit in the Southwestern Public Service Building lobby will present V-Mail processes and advantages. Sponsored by the Army with the local USO Council led by H Sim Kelly, the display runs July 10 to 22 and Amarillo is among the first cities to host it. The War Department says over sixty million V-Mail letters were sent in one month with similar totals overseas, and more than half a billion have been mailed since June 1942 to save cargo space. Travel notes include Mr and Mrs Harold Finch and daughter Barbara traveling to Pittsburg Kaw for three weeks. Returns include Mr and Mrs Hugh Wilson and Mr and Mrs Hugh Hale from Red River New Mexico. Jesse Ray Williams of Happy visits his mother Daisy Williams at 407 Arch Terrace.
