Arthur Brisbane notes Senate debate over a vetoed veterans bill proposing 10 million dollars yearly in aid, while pointing out pensions now cost 8500 million annually and comparing wartime casualties to funding. He cites Mellon family actions, Pitt and Chatham lineage, and remarks on European travel among elites. Includes ads for ambulance services and rug cleaning.
Three killed and five hurt in last night accidents in Amarillo area. Victims include Robert Lee Corliss 27 of St Mathews Kentucky Walter H Doyle 23 of Wichita Falls and Zack McCray resident of 500 West Third Street Amarillo. Merle Webb 15 severely injured with right foot amputated at Northwest Texas Hospital. Other injured are Mrs Corliss, Mrs Josh Kelly, Roy Davidson and Merle Downard. Local ambulances answered 18 calls as Fourth approaches.
Dallas July 4 Lynch Davidson former gubernatorial candidate writes letters to friends asserting Senator Clint C Small of Wellington has the best chance to defeat the Democratic Machine of Ferguson Love and Mayfield. He also says James Young cannot win under current conditions and cites anti prohibitionists backing Young. The letters imply Davidson and Small are close friends though the reveal shocks observers.
A 20th annual National Elimination race opens in Houston with 15 large balloons lifting at 4 pm. Two balloonists landing in the farthest field will join John Ward Van Orman to represent the nation in forthcoming events.
Mrs Helen Wills Moody won the Wimbledon ladies singles title for the fourth year in a row, defeating Elizabeth Ryan 6-2 6-2 in the final. Moody also recently defended the French and British crowns and still holds the United States championship and other major titles.
Billy Henderson a 17 year old from Rush Springs Oklahoma was killed by an eastbound Fort Worth and Denver City railway passenger train in Childress Texas while asleep on the track. Oliver Kuykendall and another man testified at the inquest saying they were en route to Amarillo. Henderson's body remained at the undertaker pending his father's arrival.
Bandits captured Miss Nettleton and Miss Harrison, missionaries, near Chunvan to Kieningfu in Fukien and hold them to nurse the sick and fetch $100,000 ransom. They were taken while traveling through Peiping, China, under AP report.
In Castleford England a chemical explosion at the Hickson and Parsons works killed seven instantly. More than twenty were hospitalized, with several in critical condition.
Weather observer Robert B. Gnagey of Western Air Express says balloons rising to 8000 to 10000 feet from Houston could drift toward Amarillo if the high altitude winds align. He notes surface winds favor an eastward path, and Amarillo may be avoided.
The Gordon Bennett international balloon races began in Cleveland on September 1 with a host entrant waiting for hydrogen gas. H. E. Honeywell of St. Louis named his bag City of Houston. One Honeywell balloon was disabled yesterday, while the other was promised to George Hineman of Cleveland. Brig. Gen. Frank Lahm allowed Hineman to use a spare army bag to prevent withdrawal. A day of stunting and parachute displays followed.
In Norfolk Virginia a 29 year old schoolteacher Mary Louise Baker and 50 year old lumberman Carl Moore Jordan wed under a contract that binds her to never claim her husband’s money or incur any debt without written consent. The document, over 2000 words, bars mercenary motives and describes joint living with Jordan’s mother. The couple married and began their honeymoon, with provisions for termination by written notice.
The Fourth of July holiday ends a grinding first session of the 72nd congress. House duties pause until December while Senate members return Monday for a special session ahead of biennial elections.
In Council Bluffs on July 4 a towel vanished from the Y M C A two years ago. It reappeared with an unsigned note asking forgiveness for stealing it. John E. Young of Morningside suggests a possible link to the death of Mrs. A D Payne amid reports of an army rifle shell found in his car, though police doubt a connection.

Harolds English performs at 9 pm with a 45 minute fireworks display planned by Wilbur C. Hawk. Races begin at 2 pm with time trials and fast-paced daylong entertainment.
James H. Collins, New York aviator, took off from United Airport in a long wing mono plane to chase Lindbergh’s record with a Wichita stop planned. He previously served at Brooke Field and March Field, flying training and Army posts.
Amarillo saw three alarms on the Fourth of July night with two caused by non firework sources. A can of canned heat burst into flames near 401 East Second at 11 49 PM. A trash fire occurred near the Western Union office on West Fifth and a skyrocket set fire to a home roof at 111 North Mc Masters. A device using cranks and two propsellers was described as a water pump by an English inventor.

In Chicago the City of Chicago held aloft by an endurance aircraft as crowds gathered at Sky Harbor. Pilots John and Kenneth Hunter planned to end the flight tomorrow night. The craft had logged 543 hours aloft and faced growing fatigue from the continuous operation.
