Prices for cattle and hogs fell sharply as the stock yards flooded with shipments while yesterday’s near record highs in the first free market in four years faded. Chicago reported record cattle receipts in six months, hogs around 16.50 compared with 18.50 yesterday.
The report notes tied to postOPA era with livestock activity, flat retail prices, and mixed market moves. Hogs in pens fall to 700 while week ago 23 400 and year ago 54 500 signal supply strains. Governors freeze rents, hold lines on prices, and CPA stays for autos while used car dealers see softening prices. Major stores and clothing makers pledge to keep OPA levels. States consider action with emergency ceilings and eviction writs restrained.
Secretary of the Treasury John W Snyder warned that if price controls lapse taxes would rise to follow prices. He urged Congress to revive rent wage and price controls and said no new tax bill is planned this year while inflation remains a threat. Fiscal 1946 showed a deficit under 22 billion with receipts over 43 billion and expenditures around 65 billion.
The House Military Affairs Committee approved a bill giving the military a strong voice in atomic energy control. Vote 24 to 3. The plan allows limited military participation on the five member control commission and authorizes the President to permit Army production of fissionable materials if deemed advisable. The bill also sets licenses for not less than one year.
Gov Stevenson said he will issue a statement urging landlords not to raise rents as OPA controls end. He said he lacks state authority to freeze rents but can appeal. He noted only 14 telegrams on the issue, none protesting rent hikes, with eleven urging rent control and no current crisis. He defended existing eviction laws and tenant protections if hardship cases arise.
Bert Locker of the Jewish Agency said at a press conference that he had received reports alleging torture of Jewish men and women detained at the Athlit camp near Haifa Palestine.

The Civilian Production Administration rejected longer fuller dresses, warning 1,000 dress manufacturers to enforce order L-85. Skirt sweeps must stay 65 to 80 inches, lengths 43 to 47 inches, sleeves 30 to 41 inches and 14 to 16 inches. Violations will be treated as willful with penalties.
Tension eased in Trieste after a general strike and reopening of shops. A massive pro Slavs funeral demonstration was planned for Slav laborer Giorgio Giorgiotti, who authorities say was killed by Italian controlled police. British and American troops policed the city with reduced tension as port work resumed and UNRRA ships remained idle.
A TWA Mainliner bound from Chicago to Kansas City made a forced landing on a railroad track injuring the pilot and delaying belt line traffic. No passengers were injured according to police. Dry lumber advertised by John Maynard Lumber Co.

A couple notices a price change from 30 to 35 cents on their hamburgers and, as they finish, a waitress quietly alters the bill to 40 cents. The explanation states the boss ordered the adjustment, catching them in the middle of a change.
Yugoslavia declines France's compromise border plan citing Trieste internationalization only with Yugoslav participation. At the Paris talks US UK and USSR ministers weigh a 10 year internationalization under joint Italian Yugoslav and Allied control as Molotov shifts to accept the boundary line Tarvisio to Capodistria, affecting Tarvisio rail and Monfalcone shipyards.
The Catholic party leader Dr Louis J M Beel forms a new bi partisan cabinet to succeed Premier William Schermerhorn. Five portfolios go to each of the Catholic and Labor parties from the May 17 election and three to non party men. The cabinet will be sworn in tomorrow by Queen Wilhelmina.
In Mississippi the Democratic primary centers on race as Negro voters vote with federal protection. Sen Bilbo denounces federal enforcement while Judge Clark in Washington vows DOJ backing. Rankin faces opposition as Bilbo seeks renomination amid national protests.
Bloody religious clashes in Ahmidabad between Moslems and Jains flare with 33 dead and 250 injured. Soldiers fire on looters and arsonists as Home Minister Morarji Desai travels from Poona to aid efforts. Markets shut and troops deployed to curb violence after a Mahaviri procession sparked the days of fighting.
The Senate Military Affairs Committee postponed action on a bill granting terminal leave pay to about 14 million veterans for one week. Senator Edwin C. President Truman told a Jewish delegation he hopes leaders in Palestine will be released and the situation will return to normal. He said arrests of alleged terrorists would not delay plans to transfer 100000 Jewish immigrants to Palestine with all dispatch and the U.S. would bear technical and financial responsibility for their transport. He expressed regret over developments and said the U.S. was not consulted on British measures.
A fire set by prisoners in an abortive escape attempt at Camp McQuaide near Watsonville destroyed 25 wooden racks. Sixth Army officers said the blaze was staged to level the camp and hinder firefighting. 1,400 general prisoners were confined. the escape attempt failed with no injuries or escapes.
Jim Moran said he will run for Congress against Senator W Lee O Daniel in 1948. Moran began attempting to hatch an egg in a publicity stunt involving an ostrich and a due date three days away, after the original mother deserted the nest a month earlier.
